Unable to clean air completely for APEC, China resorts to blocking data

By Simon Denyer and Xu Yangjingjing November 10

BEIJING – China has made a gargantuan effort to clear Beijing’s smoggy air for an important regional summit this week, closing hundreds of factories and forcing cars off the road, but its efforts have only been partially successful.

On Monday afternoon, the U.S. Embassy air quality monitor reported a reading of 157, a measurement classified as “unhealthy”. Red-faced, the Chinese government has come up with an innovative solution – block the data from being displayed on local smart phone apps and Web sites.

Not so different from the way our Regime kept the Obamacare numbers secret when they weren’t favorable.

Economy & Business

For Beijing Residents, APEC is Both Hindrance and Holiday

Beijing is putting on its best face for foreign leaders, inconveniencing many of the city’s residents.

Many government employees are on a paid, six-day holiday and public schools are closed during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, which is taking place here through Nov. 11. To bring blue skies to Beijing, factories have been shut down for miles around the capital. Traffic is lighter than usual, with even-odd license plate rules in effect to limit cars on the road.

Near the National Convention Center, where the APEC CEO summit is taking place, Zheng Xiaoyang and his daughter planned to visit Olympic Park on Monday. But barriers and police tape prevented them from getting in and he said he wasn’t happy with Beijing’s changes. “I think it’s a false appearance. The air is indeed better and so is traffic, but after APEC, everything will just go back to what it really is,” Mr. Zheng said

I’m shocked.

I mean I’m shocked that Beijing has an air pollution problem.

During the 2008 Olympics, Chinese officials explained that Beijing has many days of “mist” or “fog” or “excess moisture” in the air, but that what they have is not air pollution or “smog”.

So, since I believe everything the communist Chinese tell us, it is shocking to hear that they seem to have an air pollution problem there.
