Science Daiy ^ | Nov 12, 2014 | American Chemical Society

Scientists have demonstrated for the first time that a single-dose, needleless Ebola vaccine given to primates through their noses and lungs protected them against infection for at least 21 weeks.

Interesting. I did not want to sign up to see the full science article. If anyone does please post the technical information on: 1. How did they deactivate it, presuming they did. 2. How was it delivered to the respiratory tract? Nasal spray? swab? 3. What else was in it other than "infectious virus particles"

Will this vaccine be “approved” for use only among those 49 and younger?

No inactivation. No intact Ebola virus. They used genetic engineering to transplant an Ebola surface protein into a different virus. A sheep in wolf’s clothing, at least in enough wolf’s clothing to produce immunity.

Really useful for medical teams. And depending on how it can be administered potentially very useful for stopping an outbreak in its tracks.

Actually immunization works better than a cure. Cures are only good for people that get sick, immunization keeps people from getting sick at all. Cures have to be administered by people, who are then at risk of getting it, unless they’re immunized. 21 weeks is a long time, especially for a bug with a 21 day incubation. If you can dose a significant chunk of the regional population population within the first month of a detected outbreak it ends, you get 2 maybe 3 waves of infected people, then it stops.

I don’t think it stokes fears at all, it alleviates them too. Just look at all the hysteria about medical personnel coming back from the hot zone, if they’re immunized before they even get there that’s a big irrational fear source eradicated.

Temporary sounds great for stopping outbreaks, it would have worked for this one, and we stopped 25 other outbreaks over the years without a 5 to 6 week vaccine.

More good news!

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Bring out your dead! The Dark Man cometh! Bring out your dead! The Dark Man cometh! Bring out your......

(Since all records of obama's past were lost in a tragic boating accident and fire, no one can be certain that the guy in the red circle isn't him...)

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

I didn't see the full article either, but my question is which strain of Ebola?

Crab-eating macaques are what brought the Reston Ebola virus to Reston, Virginia from the Philippines (where it had arrived from Sumatra and Indonesia).

It appears that Reston Ebola does not infect humans. Granted, it's nice if someone's working on a vaccine against Ebola - but if it's only against Reston Ebola and can't be modified to work against other strains of Ebola, it's only good news for monkeys.
