Known for its liberal politics, Berkeley has racked up a long line of firsts over the years, from taxing sugary drinks to ditching Styrofoam takeout containers.
City officials are now considering another novel plan: putting stickers on gas pumps citywide to warn consumers that burning fuel contributes to global warming.
The Berkeley City Council is set to vote Tuesday to possibly move forward by early next year with the proposal, among the first of its kind in the U.S. San Francisco is drafting a similar ordinance that the city's Board of Supervisors could vote into law by next spring.
Environmental improvement efforts in Berkeley date back to 1910, when the city was the first to put police officers on bicycle patrols. In 1989, Berkeley adopted a citywide ban on Styrofoam, and about decade ago city vehicles were converted to operate on biodiesel.
Berkeley voters overwhelmingly approved the special tax on sugary drinks earlier this month, becoming the first U.S. city to pass such a measure.
Supporters of the gas-pump measure hope that simply putting the labels in front of consumers will motivate them to drive less.

Yea, that would make me change my driving habits. LOL!
One word, ASSWIPES!!!
Berkeley is a city, it is an asylum.
I put a ‘nt in that last post. Really
Berkeley isn’t a city.
The peoples republic of Bezerkley has spoken! so shall it be written, so shall it be done!
Buncha fascist schmucks.
CC
Me too. Makes me want to fire up the F250 for a long trip and drive for hundreds of miles in my low mileage Jeep.
“WARNING: Do not drink from nozzle as this could cause serious injury or death.”
Let’s tattoo newborns...”Exhaling contributes to global warming”
That should close all of the gas stations within the Berkeley city limits.
Hey Berkeley and Sacramento, I have a 1958 Chevy Impala that probably get around 18 miles to the gallon. Come take it out my cold dead hands.
It actually would make me change my gas buying habits if I ever bought in Berzerkely. I don't need to be nannied by idiots and the idiots don't need to be burdened with dirty money from taxes on products they don't believe in. Buy your gas on the other side of the city limits and leave Berkeley with just the exhaust fumes.
Liberals and their stamps, signs and pleas ... sad that they think that the majority of Americans gives a crap about their tree hugging philosophy.
For the few conservatives left in that benighted state, a caravan of gas guzzlers heading in after the stickers go on would be a magnificent act of defiance...........
Exhaling CO2 also contributes to global warming. Breathe less, peasants!
Another feel good idea by the liberals. Like anyone is really going to read the stickers. As it is, most people ignore the cell phone/pager warning at the pumps, seeing no problem carrying on a conversation while pumping gas.
LOL!
But considering the average Berkeley IQ I would understand their requiring “Not for internal use” signs at the pumps.
Whenever these idiots come up with these plans, I just walk outside and burn all my plastic bags and garbage. I figure if we open up the hole in the ozone layer again, it’ll let all the globull warming out. /sarc
You, sir, are a callous person ... to use your cell phone next to a gas pump after all the warnings. Do you even realize the deaths that have been cause by the use of cells phones next to a gas dispensing machine?
Exactly 0
LOL
can we tattoo “breathing causes globull warming” on their foreheads too?
