You do realize that the hippie movement was hijacked by the New Left. The original hippies were classical anarchists or libertarians, a bit naive (hence the phrase ‘hippie dippie’), but not leftists, and certainly not the Marcusian sort of leftist that turned into political correctness. Think of the lyrics of The Beatles “Revolution”, which as a critique of the shift to the left: “...and if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao, you ain’t gone make it with anyone, any how...”
I do realize that, I was born and raised in the San Francisco bay area during that time period and was somewhat caught up in the movement. I was never interested in politics until I saw what a disaster Carter was and how great Reagan was. First time I voted was for Reagan second term and I’ve been a conservative ever since. Some of my friends that are still old hippies ask me why I am so “right wing” and I explain to them what you just wrote. I tell them that I believe in individual liberty and freedom from oppression from big gov’t.
