Britain forced to ask Nato to track 'Russian submarine' in Scottish waters

Defence experts said it is 'hugely embarassing' that defence cuts mean Britain can no longer patrol its own waters

Britain called in Nato sea patrol planes to hunt for a suspected Russian submarine off Scotland last month, after the Government scrapped its own similar aircraft in defence cuts, it has been disclosed.

Maritime patrol aircraft from France, America and Canada flew to Scotland to join Royal Navy warships hunting for the suspected submarine after it was spotted at sea, west of Scotland.

At the height of the hunt in late November and first days of December, four allied patrol planes flew to RAF Lossiemouth to join the search, Aviation Week reported.

The UK scrapped their Nimrods, without any replacement, in the 2010 Defense budget cuts.

The UK, like most other NATO countries hasn't been spending the required 2% of GDP on military spending for many years. Now that the Bear is becoming active again, the shortfalls are becoming visible, and quite glaring.

UKIP and some conservatives are creating a HUGE stink about having to beg for FRENCH Anti-Sub planes to come to their aid.

From Twitter, it appears that not only was the “Russian Sub” “off the Scottish Coast, but it was near a big Brit naval Base INSIDE of the Clyde River Estuary. The Brits couldn’t respond because they scrapped the Abti-sub planes, and the Sub-chasers there were laid up for maintenance.

For perspective, the Royal navy today consists of 6 destroyers, 13 frigates, and 22 patrol vessels. And 6 subs.
THAT is the Royal Navy today.

But on the other hand, nobody is coming to invade them, except of course, via airliner.
