There may be an odd twist to this. The job of Speaker does not have to be held by a congressman. So imagine that even if the conservatives might not be able to make one of their sitting members of congress the Speaker, they might be able to persuade the rest of the Republican conference to accept a non-member.

Such as Allen West. He is very conservative, knows how congress works, is very disciplined and has strong core values. He is also popular with the conference.

I think West is great. However, after seeing the directions Powell, Rice and recently Ben Carson took, I would rather see West reelected to congress then as a national figure.

I love that Allan West forced himself into the congressional black caucus. They hated him for it and he was in their face and at all their meetings, raising objections.

Apparently he was offered a gig at a think tank and accepted, he may not be running for a congressional seat anytime soon.
