I worked with a couple people who were recovering alcoholics...they invited me to one of their meetings which I expected to hear such awful stories of hardhip...when in fact the problems they faced really were pretty much what most people face.
I came away realizing that some just haven’t learned or don’t know how to live and surpass their hardships...so they escape via drugs and booze....until it hooks them.
There could genuinely be an area of their soul where God’s power is badly lacking. This is, as I have now come to understand, a fallout of the fall of mankind, a mystic mutual rebellion which took place before our physical births. God does not make junk, but we had permission to make ourselves junk and as a group did so.
The resulting tragedy and coming to grips is part of God’s salvational plan. Don’t be hyper quick to judge these weaknesses, remembering that there may be mine fields in your own soul, which might not have driven you to a bottle, but may have driven you to something which AFAIK is worse, like self righteousness. And you might not see it and nobody else may see it because God’s grace has temporarily covered it, but until it’s really forgiven and cleansed it is still there, needing attention some day. And grace, properly channeled, is the only thing that will cleanse it.
