Panama Immigrants Flood US for Surprising Reason
cbnnews ^ | January 01, 2015 | Chuck Holton

The crisis on our southern border has many searching for reasons why thousands of immigrants are seeking to live in the United states.  The influx of illegals has been attributed to poverty and crime in Latin America, but that isn't the only reason.  Panama has the highest per capita income of any country in Latin America. It's also the farthest from the southern U.S. border. But its citizens are heading to the United States as well. Only it isn't the kind of people you might think.

Sarah is a well-educated business owner in Panama.  "I have two businesses...a bar and an Internet cafe," she explained.  The businesses are profitable, but when Sarah became pregnant with her first child, her friends told her she should go to the United States to have her baby.  "My friend told me that we could go to the United States to have our babies so they could have the United States citizenship," she confessed.

Her friend wasn't suggesting they enter illegally. Both of them were able to show sufficient income to get a tourist visa. That meant they would be able to fly to California where they could then wait to give birth. Her friend had done it once before. "She was really afraid because her belly was a little big, but they didn't ask anything and they allowed her to enter like normal, like tourist. They didn't ask anything to her," Sarah said.

As a bonus, her friend was able to have her baby at a hospital in Los Angeles and pay nothing for it. The bill was picked up by the taxpayers.  "She didn't pay anything. She only paid the stay, the rent in the house that she was staying, and the food, and that's the only thing that she paid," she said. This isn't an isolated case. Some Southern California hospitals report that 99 percent of new mothers they serve are illegal immigrants.

"Yeah it's very common. I know, like, five or six people that go there and already have their babies there and they are planning to have more babies," Sarah said.  When these "anchor babies" turn 21 years old, they will be eligible to bring their families from central America as well. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, as many as 8 percent of children born in the United States have at least one parent who is in the country illegally. That's more than 340,000 kids per year.

"My friends wanted their babies to be Americans because it's going to be easier for them to get a job to go to college and to enter to the country later when they grow up," Sarah said. Sarah decided against having her baby in the United States because she was afraid she'd be lonely for the several months she'd have to stay. But she said she understands why her friends did it.

Who wrote this drivel?

No, it's entirely obvious why people want to live in the U.S. instead of the crappy places they come from.

Panama [... .] It's also the farthest from the southern U.S. border.

No, that would be ... I'm not sure without an atlas and a protractor ... Argentina?

To pop out an anchor baby isn’t a “surprising” reason.

The bill was picked up by the taxpayers

We really need to amend that amendment to get rid of the “anchor baby” situation.

It’s probably because they see Juan Williams on Fox and think, “if he can be such a success in the US, any Panamanian can strike it rich there.”

The “anchor baby” issue and the “free medical care” issue are two different things. Collecting from foreign nationals is a problem for any business, but I imagine specialist businesses would develop for just that purpose, if medical facilities decided to be aggressive.

You mean that when she flies back to Panama, she’ll find that there’s a lien on her internet cafe?

I agree with you.

But I applaud publishing articles like this one for a very basic reason.

Every day a few people that never paid attention to the news before start.

So reiterating the obvious every so often is a good thing.

Probably an article like this will outrage someone today that never realized that immigrants were coming to this country to have their baby so that they could have US citizenship.

Parts of Chile are much closer, though. Border to border ... maybe Uruguay?

It would be nice if that were true, followed by a contract collection company, perhaps Panamanian nationals, collecting.

You know, I’m sick and tired of America abusing the rights of all these people. I think we should make the whole world American citizens and give them free Healthcare and retirement benefits. (sarcasm)

Anchor baby insanity. Nobody is proposing to fix this.

Every politician on the right is afraid of being labeled as mean and anti-immigrant.

Common sense in this country has been replaced by feelings. Sure you are going to offend someone if you tell them that they are not welcome in this country because they have no useful skills that this country needs.

But hey; those are the facts.

Maybe your country’s culture does not fit well with ours and we do not want very many of your people in our country because we want to preserve our culture. Sorry but those are the facts.

For most of the countries in the world that is the way they handle immigration and it used to be the way it was handled here.

Try immigrating to Japan. Bad news pal you can’t. Japan is for Japanese only. I don’t care if your family has been living in Japan for generations. If your family tree is not Japanese for a dozen centuries you are not ever going to be Japanese.

People have been doing this for decades. I wonder if the IRS is following up as they grow up and making them pay taxes on their businesses and incomes in their countries of origin as they would a natural born or naturalized citizen? I’m not holding my breath.

Fix this? To our overlords, these people ARE the fix - to our low birthrate. They’re being trafficked here to keep housing, schools, and store aisles full.

Anchor baby insanity.
Nobody is proposing to fix this.

It was fixed, in 1924. It's been misinterpreted since then. Originally, the fourteenth amendment gave citizenship to former black slaves, in 1868. It fixed the situation where black slaves were denied citizenship. It was meant just for black Americans. As proof, American Indians were denied citizenship until the Indian Citizenship Act of 1924, where Indians were given citizenship.

The fourteenth amendment was never intended for pregnant illegal aliens to give birth here and have citizenship given to their babies. Liberals never pay attention to what the Constitution means.
