If only it was a matter of just going along with the crowd.
When Mr. Smith goes to Washington he quickly learns the truth. If he plays along he gets the following benefits:
1) Money. Campaign cash and support from the party, lobbyists and wealthy donors. The job of financing expensive reelection campaigns becomes much easier. In addition, he can keep left over campaign cash when he leaves office. Finally, if he plays along and loses a future campaign he will immediately be placed in a lucrative 6 figure lobbying or corporate job.
2) Pleasures of the flesh. Washington is full of beautiful young women and young men seeking to be close to the seats of power. If the Congressman supports the status quo, he or she can enjoy sexual fantasies without fear of exposure.
3) Power. Obedience to the party over time results in plum committee assignments and ultimately committee chairmanships. In addition, party support for other offices becomes easy to secure.
4) Ego gratification. With power and position comes the opportunity to enjoy fabulous star studded parties and travel the world staying at luxury resorts at taxpayer or benefactor expense. Plus, senior legislators are frequently appear on national television.
In contrast consider the implications of opposing the establishment:
1) Character assassination. One’s entire life and all relationships immediately become fair game for a hostile press and a leadership out to remove the source of irritation.
2) Primary opposition and withdrawal of funds during next election campaign.
3) Zero party support for any initiative of the Congressman.
4) Punishment. The worst office, staff support, and committee assignments. Ostracism by the leadership and those supporting the leadership.
5) Limited appreciation. Most constituents will not appreciate the sacrifice for principle. More likely they will vote the Congressman out for not bringing home the bacon.
It isn’t surprising most choose door #1.
