One of the dirty little secrets about American television is that minorities and uneducated people make up a disproportionate share of the audience.

There was one bit of Dr. Ben Carson's story that I found remarkable but doesn't get a lot of attention. When he was a kid his mother worked as a domestic housekeeper for wealthy white families. She was illiterate and uneducated, but was also smart and perceptive in her own way. One of the things she noticed is that those wealthy families hardly ever watched television when they were home, and she suspected that this was a big reason why they were successful.

That's when she stopped letting her children watch TV. And the rest, as they say, is history.
