Years ago (80s?) there was a teenager who hung around the municipal airport in El Cajon, CA. He persuaded his family that he had learned how to fly a plane. He, um, “borrowed” a plane, and got his family to come on a ride with him. He didn’t know as much as he thought he did, and the plane crashed. I can’t remember if there were any survivors.
I guess there are some people who can “fake it” really well, and get others who should know better to go along with them.
Scary.
There was a Resident at UNC Chapel Hill Hospital a few years ago who never went to Med School and got into the residency program. Needless to say, they now check the credentials better.
He was a psychiatry resident so I guess it was easier to fake it.

Six people, three of them working as doctors, were arrested yesterday in the New York City area on criminal charges of possessing fraudulent medical degrees, and the state authorities said about 100 others would face similar charges in the near future.
A seventh indicted person, who was serving the fourth year of a surgical residency at the Cabrini Medical Center in Manhattan, was being sought by the police.
Those arrested included residents in psychiatry, pediatrics and family medicine at Cabrini, as well as at Bellevue and Jamaica hospitals, who were charged by the authorities with paying as much as $20,000 for a fraudulent degree.
