Actually it was a Chevy and they would have pulled it off except the honest fire dept crew here in Indiana told the truth to local media how it was faked.
It was a Chevy pickup with gas tank mounted outside the frame rail. Ford gas tanks were mounted inside the frame.
However you are right it was a rigged report.
I think you "misremembered" that. You got NBC right, but it was a Chevy pickup, and the items attached were pyrotechnics, which are even better at starting a fire.
