Train of Storms to Bring Upper Midwest, Northeast Unrelenting Snow Into Next Week
AccuWeather.com ^ | 6FEB2015 | Alex Sosnowski

A train of storms will bring round after round of snow from the Upper Midwest to part of the Northeast this weekend into early next week.

The biggest storm in the bunch will be the caboose in the train, set to affect the Northeast Sunday night into Monday night.

The storms will bring episodes of snow every 12-24 hours or so from northern Minnesota and northern Michigan and southern Ontario to upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey and New England.

In some cases, there may be snow of varying intensity from this weekend right straight through into early next week. The first batch of snow in the train moved into the Upper Midwest on Friday, by way of the Canada Prairies.

During Saturday, the snowy corridor will expand from the upper Great Lakes to New York state, central and southern New England to the northern part of Pennsylvania, northern New Jersey and part of Long Island.

Additional systems will follow into early Monday in the Midwest, with the final storm exiting New England by Tuesday.

Most of the snow events will tend to be more of a nuisance, where property owners will have to clean off a coating to an inch or two of snow or slush periodically, while road crews will have to put down several rounds of deicing or anti-skid materials.

There will be some exceptions, mainly just north of the track of each of the storms where several inches of snow can fall. The cumulative effect of the snow could be heavy and difficult to manage for some communities.

According to AccuWeather.com Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams, "The potential is there for a heavy accumulation in some of the same places that were hit hard with feet of snow in the past two weeks."

Areas in the Northeast most likely to receive a heavy accumulation of snow will extend from upstate New York to central New England.

From a skiing standpoint, the pattern is about as good as it gets from the Upper Midwest to New York state and New England with natural snow and persistent cold air.

The storms will move along an extreme temperature boundary separating arctic air to the northeast from mild Pacific air to the southwest.

South of the wintry weather zone, it will feel like spring from parts of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia to the Gulf Coast, especially where the sun is out for an extended period of time. Temperatures in these areas will range from the 40s F to the 50s and 60s from north to south.

During this weekend, cities such as Toronto, Boston and Albany, New York, will likely remain in the snowy, cold zone, while areas from Chicago to Cincinnati and Philadelphia remain in the mild zone and with rain at times.

A wintry mix zone will stretch from north of Detroit to near New York City this weekend. However, through Sunday, a north-south shift in track of the storms by as little as 50 miles could put this swath in or out of the persistent snow area.

Significant Winter Storm Possible Early Next Week

Perhaps the storm to watch closely for widespread travel disruptions in the Northeast, including the mid-Atlantic, will be the caboose of the train.

Sometimes the last storm in the series ends up being the strongest and the largest. This is because the storm has the least competition and marks the start of a new weather pattern.

There is some indication that as the last storm in the series moves from the central Appalachians to the upper mid-Atlantic coast, it will strengthen from late Sunday into Monday. As this happens, cold air will spread southward, along with the risk of wintry precipitation.

Depending on how quickly and how far south this last storm of the bunch tracks will determine the extent and amount of snow, from Detroit and Cleveland to the New York City area.

According to AccuWeather.com Chief Operating Officer Evan Myers, "It would have to snow hard to accumulate on roads in New York City during the day on Monday with temperatures hovering in the 30s."

"We are not sure that will be the case that far south." Unless the third storm tracks farther south, the most likely area for heavy snow Sunday night into Monday night will once again be from upstate New York to central New England. There is the potential for the caboose storm to bring a foot of snow to part of New England on top of what falls through the day Sunday.

Because of the uncertainty with the intensity and track of the caboose storm snowfall forecasts could change during early next week in the upper part of the mid-Atlantic to New England.

AccuWeather.com has released its spring 2015 outlook for the United States and will continue to provide updates on the train of storms forecast to affect areas from the Midwest to the Northeast into next week.

Yeah, yeah, that’s what they said last week!

My office, bless them, closed for two days and we watched 48 hours of flurries as the faces of the weatherman and Mayor DeBlasio got redder and redder, from embarassament, not cold!

Last I heard it was going to be well above freezing here (NJ) on Sunday/Monday, but who knows.

Please, if Mother Nature is going to pile it on, make it good in the wee hours Monday AM so we can all stay home with dignity!

Makes me glad to have turned Southerner in ‘86 when I arrived in Biloxi for my last tour in the AF. At the time, Biloxi Summers were as rough on me as a NY Winter - these days it hasn’t been as hot down here as it was when I arrived. But, it seems to be even colder up there - go figure...much more of this glo-bull warming and my original home will be frozen over and my current home will average 75 degrees — paradise!

Nobody does that, we have over six feet of snow.

while road crews will have to put down several rounds of deicing or anti-skid materials.

Thus destroying our cars with rust and corrosion, so they can tax the hell out of us when we get them repaired or replaced.
