Islam serves nicely as Marx's, "opiate of the masses." Until it turned around to bite them, the Soviets were happy to foment the Islamic world as long as it meant trouble for the west. Granted, Marxism is an ostensibly atheistic philosophy, but in fact it's "god" is the state. Ultimately, Marxists and muslims will go at each other's throats, but not until they have achieved their collaborative, joint goal of destroying their arch-nemesis, the Judeo-Christian west.
I believe his comment was “a Muslim loving Marxist” not a Muslim and a Marxist. In any event, search the phrase “islamic socialism” and you will find examples, such as Yasser Arafat and Moammar Gadhafi.

He is totally supportive of his Muslim upbringing and the Muslim objectives in the ME and he was raised a Marxist by his grandparents and F.M Davis and all the others that he bragged about in his books.
