Decked out in his US army-issued fatigues and a lip stud shining from his mouth, the young American fighter cuts an unusual figure in the northern Iraqi town of Al-Qosh.
He served in the US army in Baghdad in 2006-2007 and has now returned to fight the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group with Dwekh Nawsha, a Christian militia whose name is an Assyrian-language phrase conveying self-sacrifice, reports AFP.
The 28-year-old, who goes by the pseudonym Brett, has become the figurehead of an emerging movement of foreigners coming to Iraq to support Christian groups.
Bearing a tattoo of a machinegun on his left arm and another of Jesus in a crown of thorns on his right, Brett jokingly refers to himself as a "crusader."
ISIS never captured Al-Qosh - but it came close enough for its mostly Christian population to flee to the neighboring autonomous region of Kurdistan, together with tens of thousands from Mosul and the Nineveh plains.
"One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter," Brett says, speaking from a Dwekh Nawsha base in the Kurdish city of Dohuk.
"But here we're actually fighting for the freedom of the people here to be able live peaceably, to be able to live without persecution, to keep the church bells ringing," he added.

The irony of all this is, when he returns the DHS will detain him and brand him as a terrorist. Meanwhile Obama will allow thousands of Syrians including ISIS, Hezbollah and other terrorists to migrate into the US, give them housing, food, medical and jobs. What a country we live in!

Recall that the Crusades were a RESPONSE to islam. So this is not new.
There have been a number of similar stories so I take that into account. If AFP published it, AFP are a decent source to say the least. I’ve followed some of their coverage on conflicts and that was good.

My Mom said that news reports stated the last word spoken by the 21 souls executed by ISIS was Jesus. Faithful to the last. Let their example and sacrifice inspire us and may God avenge them.
Crusaders? More like the Lincoln Brigade — minus the communist rhetoric — from the Spanish Civil War. Another time that allied governments collectively sat on their hands.

Went to link which I rarely do and found it very informative. The lead centers around an ex US army 28 year old who is serving as a recruiter. Discusses recruitment by various organizations including a Syrian Kurdish unit which it claims others left and joined this one because it’s too Commie oriented. But did offer a comment from a US vet belonging to it who claimed they quit that suggested (my impression not his) they “chickened out”.
