A Democrat on the Federal Communications Commission wants to see changes that could narrow the scope of new net neutrality rules set for a vote on Thursday.
Mignon Clyburn, one of three Democrats on the FCC, has asked Chairman Tom Wheeler to roll back some of his provisions before the full commission votes on them, FCC officials said.
The request which Wheeler has yet to respond to puts the chairman in the awkward position of having to either roll back his proposals, or defend the tough rules and convince Clyburn to back down.
Its an ironic spot for Wheeler, who for months was considered to be favoring weaker rules than those pushed for by his fellow Democrats, before he reversed himself and backed tougher restrictions on Internet service providers.
Clyburns objections complicate the highly anticipated vote and add an extra bit of drama to the already high tensions on the five-member commission.
Wheeler will need the votes of both Clyburn and Democratic Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel to pass the rules, since the two Republicans on the commission are expected to vote against anything he proposes.
Clyburns changes would leave in place the central and most controversial component of Wheelers rules the notion that broadband Internet service should be reclassified so that it can be treated as a telecommunications service under Title II of the Communications Act, similar to utilities like phone lines.
Proponents of net neutrality have said such a move is the surest way to prevent Internet service providers from interfering with peoples access to the Web.
However, she wants to eliminate a new legal category of broadband subscriber access services, created as an additional point of legal authority for the FCC to monitor the ways companies hand off traffic on the back end of the Internet.

Who are these #$%&* $^%^&*( that want to control our lives?
Seems the liberals would be up in arms over this one.
I guess we can kiss the internet goodbye, at least the internet we have come to love and abuse. One of the last places were freedom of speech is still valid.
Why don’t they just leave the internet alone! I know it will become just another tax revenue source and to me that is what it is all about.
If this monstrosity passes, the sheeple will be led to believe it’s the ISP’s fault; just like the left is attempting to blame the evil insurance companies for Obamacare’s failure.
My guess is that a last minute round of bidding has erupted, in bribing these officials.
“Why don’t they just leave the internet alone?”
Are you kidding? If any portion of your life can’t be regulated, ruled, controlled, or taxed, liberals don’t allow it to exist.
King George III is about the take away all the printing presses:
What would The Framers have done..?
What a disaster on wheels.

net neutrality is just Obama neutralizing all enemies on the Internet
Her dad is in congress and a real jerk.
Doesn’t matter - Obama is determined to destroy the Internet as a means of political communication and commentary and a medium for the propagation of the news.
Meanwhile, the toothless *ssholes in congress sit around doing nothing with their thumbs up their b*tts.
Not to worry. All the government run websites will have unrestricted bandwidth for their propaganda.
Unfortunately you have the right of it.
Looks like our leader Jim Robinson will have to go on unemployment.... sarc.
GOP Concedes to Obama on Net Neutrality

Republicans, acknowledging that they are for now unable to win a grueling fight, are giving way on net neutrality.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is set to vote Thursday to regulate Internet service as a public good, applying controls similar to the ones it uses on utilities.
Republicans, led by Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, admit that they have no legislative workaround to the Democratic-controlled FCC in the absence of a bipartisan congressional consensus, The New York Times reported.
“We’re not going to get a signed bill that doesn’t have Democrats’ support,” Thune said.
Democrats, led by President Barack Obama, and backed by new media firms such as Twitter, Tumblr, and Reddit, favor imposing FCC regulation so that companies that control the broadband world Comcast, Verizon, and Time Warner Cable, for example can be blocked from charging for faster delivery to transport their content.
