The return of Todd Akin? (may run for senate against RINO Blunt)
thehill.com ^ | 2/25/15 | Jonathan Easley

Todd Akin is considering a primary challenge to Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) in 2016.

“I have not ruled anything out,” the former congressman and 2012 GOP Senate nominee told The Hill in a phone interview on Wednesday.

“I think there is a high level of dissatisfaction among conservatives, that they have to some degree been pushed out of the Republican Party,” he continued. “The sentiment is there. The Tea Party is skeptical and wants some fresh blood, not just the same establishment guys.” Akin’s reemergence is sure to be an unwelcome development for national Republicans.

During his 2012 race against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), the Republican triggered a firestorm of criticism from both Democrats and fellow Republicans for saying that women rarely get pregnant from "legitimate rape” during a discussion about why abortion should be illegal in all cases, even rape and incest.

When Akin refused to back down, the GOP essentially abandoned him in the once-winnable race, and his gaffes hurt the party across the board.

Now, the GOP pariah says if he did run, it’d be to try to move his party away from a singular focus on economic issues, which he says has come at the expense of social issues, like abortion.

And Blunt, he argues, will have problems with the state’s conservative base.

“I think [Blunt’s] support among conservatives is weak,” Akin said. “His biggest liability is a third party conservative getting into the race. If I were in Roy’s shoes, that’s what I’d be worried about.”

Todd Akin and Christine O’Donnell blew up congressional amnesty.

http://patterico.com/2010/12/19/mickey-kaus-christine-o%E2%80%99donnell-stopped-the-dream-act-and-joe-miller-updates/

2012 Autopsy without Akin: GOP lost because of Hispanics. The GOP only has to do amnesty to win.

2012 Autopsy with Akin:GOP lost white women vote because of abortion. Let’s cave on abortion and piss off the pro-lifers and start a huge infight. Then anything that looks RINO will be questioned even more. Then lets do some gun control to pander to liberal whites and Hispanics. Let’s do amnesty to pander to hispanics. But Hispanics like gun control but wont that mean more gun control.

His little faux pas cost us a senate seat.

Like a status quo Republican winning it would make a difference....

The pro-life cause needs spokesmen who are articulate and capable of sound moral reasoning. Akin expresses himself badly and his much-mocked position there is a mechanism by which women who are victims of forcible rape will not conceive was mocked for the wrong reason — the belief there is no such mechanism, when in fact elevated cortisol levels due to trauma do make conception less likely. The real reason to mock it is that he is too dim to see that a mechanism that merely decreases the likelihood of conception is not relevant to the moral calculus around a “rape exception” to a ban on abortions. To be morally relevant the mechanism would have to always prevent conception, and we know this is not the case.

As someone else wrote, Akin is damaged goods. Find someone else to primary Blunt.

AKIN is dead meat as far as I’m concerned. His stupidity and, much more, his pride/hubris cost us a conservative US Senate seat. It was our great misfortune that the Sarah Palin endorsed candidate (Sarah Steelman) lost the primary to Akin. Claire McCaskill and the Missouri ‘RATS had a good understanding and worked to insure his upset win in the primary.

Akin fulfilled the wildest dreams of the Missouri ‘RATS with his idiocy. Go away Todd and never come back!

I wish the Todd Akin smears would stop! Especially on FR!

Todd Akin was inarticulate in one interview and Rove just could not wait to backstab him. All because Akin had the gall to defeat Rove’s oh so precious candidate. Todd was leading in the polls until Rove opened his fat mouth and announced he was withdrawing all funds from Akin. Rove practically endorsed McCaskill. Akin never recovered after Rove and the rest of the GOPe threw him under the bus.

Ditto the same treatment of Sarah, of Christine O’Donnel, of Sharon Angle, and of Chris McDaniel. All because they are.true conservatives, and that scares the GOPe most of all.

It is bad enough to have to read the Akin smears over the rest of the internet. We should not have to read Akin smears here.

He also refused to step aside and let someone else run because Huckabee insisted he stay in the race. We could have gotten rid of that awful McCaskill if not for his stupidity and bone headed remarks. Same with Murdoch in Indiana. Go away please.

Here on FR they are NOT smears...they are facts. Todd Akin stupidly committed political hara-kiri and then when it became obvious he was going to lose the general election he selfishly refused to stand down (probably under the advice of his wife and politically ambitious son).

He blew it! And that’s why we’ve got six more years of Claire.

We never hear calls for RINOs to step down. Todd was leading in the polls until Rove shot him down. Todd would have won if the GOP would have supported him the way Democrats and GOPe support their own.

How does one inarticulate interview equate with surrendering on Obamacare and Amnesty?

Our country and the conservative movement would be immensely better off with a hundred Todd Akins in Congress instead of the GOPe types there now.

I hope Todd runs and beats Blunt in the primary like a drum. And if not in the primary, then as a third party in the general.

I’ll add that it is wrong to put the treatment of Sarah and Chris McDaniel in with Christine O’Donnel and Sharon Angle.

Sarah and McDaniel were strong candidates while Angle and O’Donnel were weak candidates. The two other republican candidates would have beaten Harry Reid in Nevada.

Akin is a waste of time and money. His career is shot. He was in Congress too long to have let that interview happen to begin with. Blunt will beat ANY primary challenger because no one else has a history of winning statewide elections. And, Blunt is going to beat the Democrat. Just be grateful he has an “R” after his name and is not clone of that wicked witch, Missouri’s other Senator.

I wonder if he will be as well compensated by Blunt as he was by McCaskill?

Doesn't matter how conservative a candidate is if they can't get elected. Akin is damaged goods. His campaign will be a distraction. Find someone else.

And, yet, McConnell remains Senate Majority Leader. I'd be pleased to have "damaged goods" like Akin over an "electable" McConnell any day. It's a shame more folks aren't as smart as I.

OK, OK, I'll run.

Hate to say it but Blunt will be the nominee and will get reelected +10 pts.

Best case is that he helps the Republican presidential candidate carry the state.

of course he should run against blunt, if he’s up for it. he’s a true conservative, unless there’s another conservative in mo, he absolutely should run. mo is a leftist state to begin with so at a minimum he should run just to keep sticking republican support for abortion in the craw of the GOPe. that and keep the senseless murder for convenience of the unborn front and center, as he did in his previous run—in which, btw, he was stabbed in the back by the leftist libertarians in mo as well as the ones in his own republocrat party. darn right he should run if he’s able.

A vote for Akin would be a vote for Kander (D), I’m glad most people seem to realize that.
