Scott Walker’s Education May Hurt A Presidential Bid in 2016 [student is trying to understand]
IVN ^ | March 4, 2015 | Taylor Lybrand

The point of mentioning all of this is not to say that those without college degrees cannot be successful. Clearly Walker’s experience has been the exact opposite.

Rather, this information simply highlights why some Americans might be surprised when they come across his education experience coupled with the success he has obtained.

Over the past month or so, several media outlets have made a big deal about the fact that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s education does not include a bachelor’s degree, and have speculated on how this could affect a potential 2016 presidential run.

Some have taken to the media to defend him, claiming that “many college degrees don’t signify much besides a limited ability to show up on time,” or that having a degree does not “necessarily even produce a leg up economically.”

Vox stated that some of Walker’s characteristics, like his academic past, may help him in a presidential campaign because he is seen “as a Midwestern-everyman.”

As of 2009, almost 28 percent of all Americans 25 and older had a bachelor’s degree or higher, while almost 65 percent did not have a formal college degree of any kind. It appears that Walker does typify the average American, something that could be useful if he decides to run in 2016.

However, Americans are actually more likely to purse an advanced education today than they were in the past. Fifteen years ago, less than 25 percent of people 25 and older had a bachelor’s degree or higher. This is not a significantly low number compared to 2009’s, but a lower number nonetheless.

The average American that Walker exemplifies may be slowly disappearing.

But there is another potential positive to all of this for Walker. He could return to school to finish out his degree and become an inspirational figure to those who have struggled to obtain theirs. Of course, some might see this as conceding to his critics, putting him in a difficult position.

The point of mentioning all of this is not to say that those without college degrees cannot be successful. Clearly Walker’s experience has been the exact opposite.

Rather, this information simply highlights why some Americans might be surprised when they come across his education experience coupled with the success he has obtained.

Education level is usually a significant characteristic of anyone looking to find a job; so even if it may not be a must-have for the position, it should be expected that some will pay closer attention to this aspect of a person if he or she is running for the highest political office in the land.

Of course, such concern doesn’t appear to be having too much of an effect since Walker is in first place in Iowa, according to a recent Republican poll. Even though his education may play a large role in the election, it certainly does not appear to be an overriding factor.

Taylor is currently studying Political Science at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC. Although he has gained much knowledge concerning politics from within academic walls, he has also experienced politics outside them as well from opportunities such as interning with the Mayor of Columbia's office and with a political consulting firm. He focuses much of his time on comparing contemporary situations with historical examples, budgetary policy, and foreign aid.

I believe Taylor Lybrand is surprised. I hope a lot of people start evaluating the, "you must have a college diploma to succeed" mantra. While specialized education is important in many fields, it is not a requirement for success (though the snobbery toward those without a degree - not being "knowledgeable" - pushes many to go to college). A lot of graduates just pick some major to have a major and never need it - or can't find a job (and are often heavily in debt).

Yea because we have done so well with ivy league elitist in the last few years.

Funny how they said having an actor would not qualify as President and yet even fairy boy mentions Reagan in a good light.

Show me a transcript from Occidental, Columbia and Harvard for Obama and I might think about whether this means anything.

A political science degree is as useful as a third testicle.

Actually, getting a degree nowadays may point to how much a sheep you are, and how stupid you are to go into 6-figure debt.

In today’s world, you are much better off going to a Vo-Tech schoole and learning a trade (i.e. Plumber, Electrician, Carpenter, Welder, Health Tech. etc)than getting some liberal arts degree like the writers POLITICAL SCIENCE. If you are going to pursue a degree, pursue one in Engineering or Computer Science (Degrees that translate into jobs).

Think back to a bazillion “on-the-street” interviews Jay Leno did with college students and grads. Most of them are lucky to be able to fog a mirror without help. Saying Walker needs a degree to be successful is like saying Bill Gates is a failure.

There was a time when people worked their way through college.

It was better that way.

You REALLY wanted it.

You got real world experience.

You weren’t saddled with debt.

Now these institutions with HUGE endowments (employing a lot of “educators” who hate America) keep raising their tuition, while falling down on teaching.

Scott Walker's lack of a college degree sends a good message. That message is that a person can get ahead without a college degree....they needn't give up on themselves.

Obama's message has been all wrong on this. When he says everyone needs a college degree, he's giving those who don't have one an excuse to fail.

Many elites with 6 or more years of schooling at expensive institutions have:
* developed climate models that only show warming trends, and when real world data shows cooling or stability, they edit the data to fit the model
* created financial models for mortgage backed securities that assumed housing prices couldn’t go down, tanked the economy in 2007-2008, when plenty of people in the real world can say yes, it can go down in value; their solution is not to admit the models were wrong but pass more regulation
* demand censorship on the basis of “fairness” and “social justice” and bully people who don’t line up as an “ally”, with the assumption that eliminating words like “salesman” will lead to equality for women, though they cannot say how

Wow.

Who would have thought that a Bachelor’s degree from Utah State while on a basketball scholarship was worthless?

The thing about brain-dead bunnies like Taylor Lybrand that fascinates me is that young Taylor & his moron peers are paying big bucks every term/semester for course texts that they KNOW can be digitized for pennies.

I would wager that Taylor & fiends also know that the edugrubers could be videotaped once, then Youtubed for eternity, reducing the cost of an ejumacation to beans, also.

But the dumbbunnies continue to pay out the nose for said "education".

LOL! Let them keep paying off their stupiddent debt till they're 90.

"If you are going to pursue a degree, pursue one in Engineering or Computer Science (Degrees that translate into jobs)."

The problem with that is these degrees require math and science classes not navel gazing poetry classes. Many kids going to school today don't want to put in that hard work. That's why we are going out and getting so many H1B visas to bring in foreigners in these fields. Not because they are being paid less money (they are not, eventually after a few years these people are paid as much), but because we have a lack of college degree professionals to do these jobs.

Walker is an executive versus a community organizer... We see what that is good for... Walker has produced results in a very hostile environment to say the least.
He does not have a secret agenda like the current interloper in chief.. And is not secretive and deceptive like the current buttplug n chief..
Far as college.... its a vacation for those who can afford it.
Harry truman, Bill Gates, and several other notable people didn’t complete the degree....
Hitlary will be after the entitlement vagina vote... she is totally unqualified and corrupt to hold any public office, and Benghazi will not go away.

TWS Poll Results: Walker in a Walk
5:27 PM, Feb 28, 2015 • By WILLIAM KRISTOL

http://www.weeklystandard.com/keyword/Scott-Walker

“........[SNIP]...

He captured 47 percent of the first choices, and featured as a first, second, or third choice on no less than 78 percent of the ballots.......

Walker: 47/78

Cruz: 9/29

Rubio: 8/31

Carson: 7/27

Paul: 7/14

Bush: 6/18

Jindal: 3/21

Perry: 2/16

Kasich: 2/13

Pence: 2/11

Huckabee: 2/9

All the other candidates had one percent of first place choices or less, and were mentioned on nine percent or fewer of the ballots in any of the first three places.

Obviously, this was not a scientific survey but rather a poll of those who chose to participate. Equally obvious, the race is early and seems very fluid. But it’s well known that WEEKLY STANDARD readers are an unusually perceptive, predictive, and prescient bunch! So make of these numbers what you will...but ignore WEEKLY STANDARD readers’ judgments—even if they are early and tentative ones—at your own peril.”
