When Liberals Blew It (Holy Cow...Is the NYSlimes shifting rightward?)
NYSlimes ^ | Nicholas Kristof

Fifty years ago this month, Democrats made a historic mistake.

Daniel Patrick Moynihan, at the time a federal official, wrote a famous report in March 1965 on family breakdown among African-Americans. He argued presciently and powerfully that the rise of single-parent households would make poverty more intractable.

“The fundamental problem,” Moynihan wrote, is family breakdown. In a follow-up, he explained: “From the wild Irish slums of the 19th-century Eastern seaboard, to the riot-torn suburbs of Los Angeles, there is one unmistakable lesson in American history: a community that allows large numbers of young men to grow up in broken families ... never acquiring any stable relationship to male authority, never acquiring any set of rational expectations about the future — that community asks for and gets chaos.” Nicholas Kristof Human rights, women’s rights, health, global affairs.

Liberals brutally denounced Moynihan as a racist. He himself had grown up in a single-mother household and worked as a shoeshine boy at the corner of Broadway and 43rd Street in Manhattan, yet he was accused of being aloof and patronizing, and of “blaming the victim.” Continue reading the main story Nicholas Kristof's Newsletter

“My major criticism of the report is that it assumes that middle-class American values are the correct values for everyone in America,” protested Floyd McKissick, then a prominent African-American civil rights leader.

He was right. The liberals who attacked him, and would today, are guilty of social Lysenkoism.

Hah! He lauds same sex “couples” raising kids - they do it through sheer altruism.

Ol’ Floyd believed the jungle born society was superior to American society. The urban jungle like feral black subculture is thriving now that it is concentrated in the urban slums. Such society has numerous organizers to direct and guide the success

I always respected Moynihan, I rarely agreed with his views on how government should be but he never tried to hide his cause and dress it up as something it wasn't.

There are some great comments at source. Here' one example...
Perhaps instead of studying the poor blacks in the ghetto, we might learn a lot from the middle class blacks, not the upper middle class blacks, but the average black who enters the military, marries, takes care of his kids, and buys a home in middle class America. When they get out of service and enter the work field, they have a skill or they learn one or go to college. They don't segregate themselves and they do not expect any special treatment. Thus, they make friends easily and thrive. These are the blacks in my neighborhood. To feel that blacks have to be protected and given special rights is to not acknowledge their equality. What goes wrong in the ghetto, I don't know, but I do know my black friends and neighbors work hard, are tough on their kids, and stress education, and they are certainly my equal in every sense of the word. Whatever they are doing, and how they do it, works.

Moynihan correctly predicted the impact of the growing number of single parent homes in the black community and he was severely criticized by liberals for doing so.

But, as I recall, he completely missed the basic cause that drove the fathers from black homes: The War on Poverty. The WOP paid black women to kick their man out of the household in order to collect bigger welfare checks. That was the goal. It worked. The blacks now vote 95% Dem to keep those welfare checks coming.

Kristof was doing good until he couldn’t resist taking the shot at Republicans for sending more criminals to jail.

Of course the NYT is not moving even a grain of sand to the right.

This is all about clearing the field of the old Dems (who they, like Obammie the Commie, consider “centrist” and not leftist enough) and paving the way for the new face of the DemocRat party:

Warren
O’Malley

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them on the same ticket with O’Malley at the top.

Remember this: the goal of the Statists is to crush, grind, churn, stomp, and scream everything and everyone constantly to the left.

Not going to read the Times, but I bet he doesn’t entertain the notion that single mothers and their children are big government’s most faithful constituency. Government policies created their large numbers; they did not occur because of some organic process.

His solution:

“In line with Moynihan’s thinking, we can support programs to boost the economic prospects for poorer families. We can help girls and young women avoid pregnancy (30 percent of American girls become pregnant by age 19).”

So...more subsidized birth control and more welfare. OK then.

Moynihan understood the problem. Unfortunately he did not fully understand the cause of the problem and the solution. He voted against welfare reform and regularly voted for more government. At least he was civil and conducted himself with grace and decorum.

In some ways, I yearn for the days when we had classic liberals like Moynihan. Think about that for a moment and compare today's progressives to yesterday's liberals.

In true Stalinist style the authors of the article on Lysenkoism in WIKI make the following conclusion:

In modern parlance, conservative writers in the United States (particularly those advocating racist thinking, either covertly or overtly) have sometimes used the term "neo-Lysenkoism" as a snarl word to attack those who do not support their "biological" views of race.[3]

The footnote refers only to a graphic and is nowhere documented except in the article.

In point of fact it has been the Democrat Party intent to destabilize the Black community since before Moynihan. He went against the deliberate effort to break down the family as part of a plan to create class dependency and maintain a substantial gang of thugs ready and willing to bring about social chaos.

L.B. Johnson spoke conclusively to this tactic with his prescient observation that the War on Poverty would act as a foil against the Civil Rights movement.

Also as I recall he later repudiated his work but that might have been under a kind of duress.

This is SOP for the propaganda mills. As elections near, they slow production of their typical left-wing spew and start selling more reasonable positions. But once they’ve elected another wave of murderous socialist scum, they quickly fire up the lie machines and revert to form.

Do not be fooled.

Democrats with a conscience like Moynihan do not exist anymore. His quote on partial-birth abortion:

“I think this is just too close to infanticide. A child has been born and it has exited the uterus. What on Earth is this procedure?”

Also stuff like excessive child support (in excess of what the children need) and no-fault divorce encourages women to break up families. A family split apart that has to maintain two separate households is more likely to live in poverty.

Leftists want to break up the family unit so that only the state raises children.
