(Reuters) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said on Thursday it was unlikely to approve new or expanded uses of certain pesticides while it evaluates the risks they may pose to honey bees.
The so-called neonicotinoid pesticides are routinely used in agriculture and applied to plants and trees in gardens and parks. But their widespread use has come under scrutiny in recent years after a drop in the number of honey bees and other pollinating insects, which play key roles in food production.
The decline is attributed to factors including pesticide and herbicide use, habitat loss and disease, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The EPA notice came the day after Oregon's largest city suspended the use of the pesticides on its property to protect honey bees.

IF they aren’t stopping monsanto pesticides it won’t do much. Monsanto’s crap is the stuff messing up the bees.
I lost 3 of 6 hives over the winter, and maybe will lose another as it is quite weak. Colony Collapse (CCD) is mostly a non-issue, IMHO, here in MA, and not the cause of my recent losses. Tough winter I guess to have bees in the Northeast.
Nonetheless, I’m of the opinion that neonicatinoids are doing a great deal of harm to honeybees. It messes up ever so slightly there navigation such that field bees get lost and the hive is left with a queen, young and drones - the lack of field workers dooms the hive.
Well at least they are not using “secret science” .... they’re just not using any science .... just a hunch is good enough.
Whatever is killing the honey bees doesn’t seem to be bothering the bumble bees. My yard is infested with them.

I’ve seen some mite problems here in west central Florida. The stuff their spraying for citrus greening is causing problems. We also had an early bloom of yellow jasmine that killed off a lot of bees north of the Tampa Bay area.
Carpenter bees? My shed was infested with these destructive pests. This is the time of the year they make their appearance. I’ve run them off for two or three years now.
Go to a garden store and see if they have Evergreen pyrethrum dust, or an equivalent. It’s a light, fluffy dust that you squeeze into the holes the bees drill into your wood structural members. Just tell them the problem.
It’s like pole-axing the little buggers ... kind of a shame because they’re harmless otherwise, just bumbling along but they are relentless as well as destructive.
I tried sealing the holes and a number of other things, nothing worked.
My hive is going strong and we are adding 2 more later this month. There aren’t any at fields nearby so I’m not too worried about my hives.
Take a hard look at GMO seed. The onset of colony collapse started contemporarily with its introduction. Ask Monsanto some questions.
I concur...it sounds like a plot by an evil mastermind. You have to buy food from only Monsanto....
