Al Sharpton Calls for Federal Police Laws After South Carolina Killing
observer.com ^ | April 8, 2015 | Jillian Jorgensen

Rev. Al Sharpton called for national policing legislation akin to the Civil Rights Act this morning at the kickoff his National Action Network’s annual convention, just after the arrest of a white South Carolina police officer for murder in the shooting of an unarmed black man.

“There must be national policy and national law on policing,” Mr. Sharpton said. “We can’t go from state to state, we’ve got to have national law to protect people against these continued questions.”

Mr. Sharpton’s comments, coming on the heels of multiple instances of police killings of unarmed men of color around the country, were met with applause from the crowd—and from the dais, which was packed with elected officials including Mayor Bill de Blasio, Congressman Charles Rangel, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, city Comptroller Scott Stringer and state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli

The convention kickoff, which featured a ribbon cutting with the lawmakers, came just hours after it was announced last night that North Charleston, S.C., police officer Michael T. Slager would be charged with murder in the death of Walter Scott—who can be seen in a widely publicized video running away from Mr. Slager, while the officer shoots into the man’s back repeatedly. The video offers a markedly different story than the one Mr. Slager first offered up: that Scott had stolen his taser and left him in fear for his life.

Here’s the new law; Any person who is ordered to stop by law enforcement may simply turn their back and leave. No need to run.

Totally with you.

This really does look bad, but I have already gone on several points that are NOT clear that both media and/or JoeSchmoe are promulgating as “obvious” when they are not from the Scott video.

-what happened to precipitate this
-how many shots actually hit (5 of 8 is standard right now, but not 8 although that is the hype - 8 shots; i.e., he plugged him mercilessly)
-what is the thing that white guy picks up (”it’s the taser!”)
-why is it dropped (”to plant evidence by the body!”)
-why does this happen at all (”racism!”)

All answers are dubious, although indeed the film makes it look like there is no excuse for him shooting someone running away.

That has been the goal all along. People love to criticize cops, but they don’t realize that local control of police and especially having sheriffs, is a bulwark against federal tyranny.

The left wants a national police force that answers only to DC. Just as in the military, a national police force would be comprised of people who are not from the area where they are assigned. They have no connection to the community and owe their allegiance to the federal government.

All the cop haters might want to ponder that for a bit.

Tired of the “cops shoot unarmed men” meme. People should try doing the job to see what it’s like.

"agree it looks bad, but i’m going to wait and see. even a complete video can be deceiving. for an example see this case, where there was a great hue and cry until the video from all 3 cameras was shown. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGtNug8gvpk"

Good point, but I don't think it is going to matter to the media and the political agenda of the left. We are headed toward some combination of Federal oversight/Federal police, police forces must be of the same race as the policed population or more minority than the population, and don't shoot minorities unless you have already been shot at at least, open fire whenever you feel it is necessary against a white target.

the early video quality is poor, but Slager’s uniform contrasts with the background. it looks like Slager is on the ground at 6 seconds and again at 8.

you can’t see where Scott is because of his green top against the green background.

so it appears there is quite a wrestling match going on.

given all the fighting etc. if Slager was just a trigger happy racist cop, he could have shot Scott at that point and claimed, “resisted arrest, grabbed for my gun...”

as it was, the first thing he did was try the taser, which shows at least some effort at proportional use of force

after the taser was knocked out of his hand, then he started blasting.

even with all that, it still looks like excessive force. but i am reserving judgement

Re “Federal Police”. The wet dream of Marxists from Obama and Eric “I Hate Whitey” Holder to Supercon/Marxist clown Al Charlatan.

Why isn’t this POS tax-cheat in jail? Oh, sorry, IRS Commissioner Koskisen and Lois Lerner. Forgot. I’m bad!

An unconstitutional and potentially tyrannical domestic federal army known as a ‘police force’ won’t solve a single problem with supposed racism but instead only subject those officer to even less direct supervision of the people by leaving them accountable to but 1 government controlled excursively by 1 man, with no recourse for any potentially abused people having no where else to flee persecution with their feet.

Agreed all around.

I’m still doubtful about “racism”, no matter what.

The other cop who came to check it out was black, no question.

I think when something goes wrong, it’s more a matter of “bad cop”, not “racist white”. I’d like to see a genuine case of “racism”, just once.

I got rid of cable and therefore no longer watch the Book of the Month Club on Fox. So I ask others, does Hannity still call Sharpton his “good friend”?

>>killings of unarmed men of color around the country

Drink!

This last case doesn’t deserve the derision, but the overall concept that Al is pushing richly does. If #blacklivesmatter, why are we only talking about a handful of police shootings of black men, most of which are deserved, and not talking about the thousands of young black men killed every year by other young black men? And at rates by population far in excess of those of other ethnicities.

THAT is the elephant in the room.

No one will talk about what’s wrong with much of black culture in America causing this.

Have you seen the video? That blue suited thug executed a running man, fired 8 times, hitting five, then doctored the crime scene to match his story.

His original lies were taken as gospel until the video appeared, and his lawyer dropped him when he found out the killer's story was standard LEO perjury.

The best thing is that people are starting to finally ask, "If this cop lied, what about all the other shootings? Is it possible that cops lie?"

I think the “planted” taser is BS. the daily mail deliberately used an unclear image when they didn’t need to.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3029597/Cop-charged-black-man-s-murder-opening-fire-eight-times-shooting-ran-away-saying-did-felt-threatened.html

frankly, the “planted taser” looks like sunglasses to me
http://imgur.com/gallery/DTYSXXC

i think i can see the taser on his belt (approx 8 o’clock) in one of the frames at 1:19
https://vimeo.com/124336782

maybe a LEO can confirm ?
