Pretty much as it as always looked within the perspective of that last 1400+ years. Just more backward, savage and economically undeveloped once the influence of Western Culture and American power over it wanes completely. The best we will be able to do is pick our very few allies there very well, and have a near complete travel ban with the entire region.

They could be stopped very quickly if that was the definitive unequivocal goal. First, destroy all oil fields that provide ISIS with income. Do it covertly and make it look like it was sabotage by factions within the terrorist ranks. Lots of other moves come after that.
