The federal government is calling for lower levels of fluoride in drinking water, the first update since the 1960s.
The new recommendation is for 0.7 milligrams of fluoride per liter of water, which replaces the previous range of 0.7 to 1.2 milligrams, according to the Health and Human Services Department on Monday.
Americans have access to more fluoride through toothpaste and mouth rinses than when the recommendations were introduced in 1962, the agency said.
Because Americans are using more fluoride, officials are worried about increases in cases of fluorosis, a condition that stains teeth exposed to too much fluoride.
"The new recommended level will maintain the protective decay prevention benefits of water fluoridation and reduce the occurrence of dental fluorosis," the agency said Monday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has lauded water fluoridation as a key reason for declining tooth decay cases.
“Ice cream, Mandrake? Children’s ice cream?”
But what about transfats in water?!?
You are correct.
We have a Berkey as well, but for back up use. I think they have changed their filters since we bought ours maybe 10 years ago, and I wasn’t certain that your statement was correct, based on the ceramic filter that came with ours. So I went to the Berkey website to get some updated info. This is what I found. Perhaps you have the add-ons and just didn’t mention it specifically, but thought you would like to read this also, just in case.
“If the recent tests show that the black berkeys remove fluoirde, then why do I need the PF-2 filters?
NMCLs most recent laboratory testing indicates that the Black Berkey Purification Elements will initially reduce Fluoride up to 99.9%. Typically carbon based elements that reduce Fluoride begin to lose that ability rather quickly. This is the case with Black Berkey elements as their efficiency at removing Fluoride plays out long before the 3,000-gallon life of the element.
There are a number of filters on the market that utilize carbonized bone char (a media that NMCL purposely chooses not to use), and that make claims for Fluoride reduction. One major problem with such elements is that it takes a very large amount of media to remove small amounts of Fluoride. Therefore, there is not enough media in such filters to remove Fluoride effectively over the long term. For example, we have testing for a competitors 3-filter system that utilizes bone char for their Fluoride removal claims and, as one would expect, those elements become quickly exhausted. Testing shows that their efficiency declines from 100% removal to 81.4% removal after filtering a mere 45 gallons. This is equivalent to only 15 gallons per element required to experience this dramatic decline in efficiency.
This same effect occurs with Black Berkey elements after a few hundred gallons. For that reason NMCL developed a more durable and longer lasting solution for Fluoride reduction by creating the replaceable Berkey PF-2 Fluoride reduction elements. The media in a set of Berkey PF-2 elements can reliably remove Fluoride contaminants for up to 1,000 gallons, which is less than the 3,000 gallon life of the Black Berkey elements but again, that is why they were designed to be replaceable. This enables the users to reliably remove Fluoride contaminants from their water while taking full advantage of the 3,000 gallon life of their Black Berkey elements.
Therefore, the Black Berkey Purification Elements job is to remove a wide variety of potential contaminants, while the Berkey PF-2 Post Filters job is to remove Fluoride contaminants that the Black Berkey Purification Elements begin to miss after extended use.”
Thanks for the ping!
So funny, they worry about mottled TEETH. no worries about all the degenerative diseases that might be helped into existence by imbibing neurotoxins.
It’s like we are all serfs working for The Government. Of the people, by the people. For the people, ha.
‘How about NO fluoride in the water .’
Got that right.
I haven’t kept score, but this subject cycles thru every so often.
Wonder if there’s a study on how crops, or lawns, etc. are affected by fluoridated water? And the birds that slurp it up - - -
‘B-but it makes our teeth soooooo healthy. /s’
I’ve been curious to know if dentist’s business of filling cavities has dropped off. And if so, traced to fluoridated water - ?
Why-ever would they be in favor of fluoridation, but some are.
‘I have to filter it out at the faucet as of now.’
We do also.
‘_________all the degenerative diseases _________’
Couldn’t tell you about that, but how about those with degenerative diseases already and drinking fluoridated water - ?
How about putting statins in the municipal drinking water - ?
Nor more heart disease - - -
Or nutrients for the eyes - no more glasses.
Add your list - -
Huge issue about any supplement added to public consumable resources is that the government is depriving us from informed consent process.
Yet another example of government Not knowing best, adhering to dubious medical community rigid orthodoxy.
Subjecting infants and toddlers to aggressive vaccine regiment of 49 doses of 16 different vaccines by age 6 comes to mind.
We are denied full disclosure of toxicity, injury evidence and settled claims.
Gov’t, mfg cabal, medical est. and media are scandalous negligent.
According to Alex Jones, if you give fluoridated tap water to cattle, they keel over dead.
Before you scream Nanny Stater at me. I LOATH gov’t interference 99% of the time. Rarely agree with either state or feds even in RED state.
When the water tastes like chems and smells like a over done swimming pool and burns your eyes, it’s time to start removing some of the chems. We have a plethora of evidence chems in our drinking water is to high as it is.
I filter my water to remove the crap.
What a joke these scumbags are. Never mind the opportunistic and unnecessary drilling of our teeth decades ago.
Go ask the guy supplying the fluoride.
Why does the government protect fluoridation at all costs. Why didnt the HHS take advantage of this widely repeated story and put in their news release some facts about fluoride that arent disputed and arent pretty and that most people are ignorant to.
There is no debate between those for and against fluoridation that too much fluoride can damage teeth and bones. Why isnt HHS telling us what the safe level to consume is per person. The concentration of fluoride in water is not equal to the individuals dose from all sources (water, food, beverages, dental products, medicines, inhaled from air pollution, ocean mist, cold mist humidifiers and showers).
Fluoride is in virtually all foods and beverages, mainly because fluoridated water is used to make them or fluoride-containing pesticide residues remain on some foods. Tea and tuna fish are examples of foods very high in natural fluoride. See USDAs Fluoride in Foods Database.
What about people who drink loads of water every day such as outdoor workers, military, athletes, dieters, diabetics, and babies fed formula made with tap water.
All infant foods whether concentrated or not, organic or not contain some fluoride, when fluoridated water is added (even at 0.7 mg/L), it puts babies at unnecessary risk of developing dental fluorosis without any benefits. See former Assistant Secretary of Healths statement advising parents not to routinely use fluoridated water to make infant formula. http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/738322
Fluoride is neither a nutrient nor essential for healthy teeth. Consuming a fluoride free diet does not cause tooth decay. Modern science proves that ingesting fluoride is unnecessary and harmful. Fluoride hardens teeth by topical application alone which means - put it on your teeth but never ever swallow it.
Fluoride is useless to the toothless - including edentulous adults who suffer fluoridation’s risks without any possible benefit but whose limited income pays for fluoridation thru taxation and water bills.
The question is why is our government protecting fluoride at all costs and covering up fluorides adverse health effects including fluorosis which occurs more often in minority populations who also have the most tooth decay.
It’s time for FluorideGate hearings!
