For years, Sharon High School parents had help finding their sons and daughters among the sea of gowns on graduation day: boys all sported deep maroon, while girls wore pristine white.

But last year, students approached principal Jose Libano with a proposal: end the tradition, which alienated some students. Now, all graduates wear maroon.

Around the region, longstanding customs of assigning graduation colors by sex are giving way to new realities, driven by transgender student activists and supportive educators and classmates of all stripes.

The change reflects a growing awareness that simple categories of male and female do not fit every teenager.

Catering to the mentally ill is no way to build a culture.

If they’re still “sorting” it out, they need to repeat 1st grade.

In today’s society, 97% of the girls are long past wearing white but that’s another soapbox.

So, a handful of anomalies and deviants get to make the rules for the vast majority.

Hey, where are my rights? I have to right to remain normal and be proud of it. When the rights of a tiny minority conflict with the rights of the majority, the majority should speak up. I’d wear white to the stupid prom and dare anyone to protest. If they kicked me out, I’d take to the internet - get some airtime on Fox. I am done with PC.

It’s easy to spot your kid when they’re at the front of the line and wearing honors ropes.

I believe that the article references the town of Sharon in Massachusetts which is a wealthy (natch!) Boston suburb. God bless!

See #48. Bill Buckley’s home town is Sharon, Connecticut in the extreme northwest corner of Connecticut, far from Sharon, Massachusetts. The article did not specify a state but the article is in the Boston Globe which seldom covers the Connecticut town of Sharon.
