Perhaps because ‘sacred honor’ has withered on the vine?

Yes, sacred honor has withered on far too many vines. Then again, true sacred honor was only there in the rare leader of heroes.

But there’s a bigger even more insidious disease, this entire idea that the government is so big and will always have money, so get yours while you can. Real opportunity is dead anyway, so just take advantage where you can.

It’s turning far too many soldiers into basic “gummint employees” instead of heroes. I live around a good number of retired military, and retired cops / fire fighters moving to NC from NY - and the vibe I get is one of government pensions and incredible 9-11 hazard pay checks. They all retire very young.
