Back in the day I used to do dog rescue. It was tough not keeping them all.
I have two rescue dogs. Each one is 75 pounds of love. They are not aggressive but they know who are good guys and who are bad guys. Dogs understand what you feel and know. If you are a good guy they will demand you pet them. If you are a bad guy the know by your actions and smell of anger and smell of fear by my wife, I have no smell of fear as I am the alpha with a gun in my hand.
My dogs will lick your hand if you are a good guy. They can crush your tibia and fibula in a single bite. My dogs are not aggressive. My dogs are part of my family.
I love my dogs and they love me and my wife. They will defend her and I to the extremist.
