Justice Department Studying ‘Far-Right’ Social Media Use
Free Beacon ^ | June 1, 2015 | Elizabeth Harrington

The Department of Justice is concentrating on “far-right” groups in a new study of social media usage aimed at combatting violent extremism. The Justice Department’s National Institute of Justice (NIJ) awarded Michigan State University $585,719 for the study, which was praised by Eric Holder, the former attorney general, earlier this year. “There is currently limited knowledge of the role of technology and computer mediated communications (CMCs), such as Facebook and Twitter, in the dissemination of messages that promote extremist agendas and radicalize individuals to violence,” according to the NIJ grant. “The proposed study will address this gap through a series of qualitative and quantitative analyses of posts from various forms of CMC used by members of both the far-right and Islamic extremist movements.”

The study draws more upon right-wing forums than upon the corners of the web inhabited by Islamist extremists.

“We will collect posts made in four active forums used by members of the far-right and three from the Islamic Extremist community, as well as posts made in Facebook, LiveJournal, Twitter, YouTube, and Pastebin accounts used by members of each movement,” the grant said. “The findings will be used to document both the prevalence and variation in the ideological content of posts from members of each movement,” the grant continued. “In addition, we will assess the value of these messages in the social status of the individual posting the message and the function of radical messages in the larger on-line identity of participants in extremist communities generally.”

The project will also “identify the hidden networks of individuals who engage in extremist movements based on geographic location and ideological similarities.”

Well, I wouldn't consider Free Republic a target of the Justice Department described as concentrating on far right groups in a new study of social media usage art combating violent extremism. But that's just me. Thee government has a totally different agenda and interpretation. It won't shut me up but others have already expressed their reticence to speak their mind. It's up to you to think for yourself.Good luck. God Bless America.

Why not study ISIS’ use of Social media
... instead of weaponizing, protecting, and helping
the Islamic terrorists?

“...in the dissemination of messages that promote extremist agendas and radicalize individuals to violence,”

You mean like the main stream media?

They must not be terribly serious about it. That’s not much money and MSU is downright Amish compared to UofM.

Laughable political terrorism by the #2 Leftist Terrorist in the United States....Eric “The Radical” Holder, immigrant alien from Barbados.

We all know who Leftist Terrorist #1 is.

Because this administration and it’s radical ideologues don’t see ISIS as a major enemy, or a threat.

WE, on the other hand, they see as enemies.

Not opposition, but ENEMIES.

Thanks. I’ve heard of Tor years ago. Its available as an add-on for Firefox or free. It’s supposed to be very effective but the drawback is that it slows down your browsing considerably.

They are studying islamist terrorist organizations...

I’m just wondering if ISIL is one of them....

After all we were told ISIL isn’t Islamic....

Of course, there will be NO investigation of left-wing extremist groups and THEIR social media use.

And remember, this administration considers “right-wing extremists” to be vets, Christians, supporters of the second amendment and those who oppose abortion and gay marriage.

If this is true then they are trying to contradict the al Qaeda doc recovered in Afghanistan which clearly shows it’s the left wing media orchestrating news stories as preparations for the terrorist attacks.

They are trying to put the blame on the right wing media as orchestrating news for the attacks but the right wing media almost didn’t exist in 1991 when preparations for the 1st WTC bombing were being made.

CTC at West Point’s Harmony Database doc# AFGP-2002-600321 is the doc they are trying to contradict.

If you think that’s bad wait till Operation Net Neutrality kicks in, in two weeks. I think some online surveillance protocols have been set in place the last few year leading to the takeover of the Internet that will make the Echelon programs look like kindergarten level spy programs. I also think he had his friendly NSA (or some secret new covert agency) setting things in motion / place quite awhile back because he knew he would get no opposition. And if you think ONN will ensure that your Internet speed gets faster. Wrong. Only for the gibsmedats.

Four “Far-Right” social forums and three Islamic-extremist. Why no “Far-Left”?

Do they honestly think no such thing exists and is no danger?

Political oppression. Unconstitutional. Stereotyping and profiling.

Someone needs to “study” the (un)Justice Department.
