Unions Subdued, Scott Walker Turns to Tenure at Wisconsin Colleges
New York Times ^ | June 4, 2015 | MONICA DAVEY and TAMAR LEWIN with Dirk Johnson

[SNIP]

.....Wisconsin is rare for including tenure provisions for professors in its statutes rather than in policies set by regents or similar boards. “We are directing the Board of Regents to develop a policy, just as there is in so many states,” Ms. Harsdorf said. “It’s just a matter of recognizing the ability for chancellors and campuses to administer and manage their operations.”

Along with tenure,“shared governance” has been a central feature of academic life in universities generally, giving faculty members the primary responsibility for decisions about matters like curriculum, choice of subject matter, instructional methods, faculty status and research. Under the proposed changes in Wisconsin, faculty members would still advise leaders on academic and educational activities, and on personnel matters, but that advice would be “subordinate” to the powers of the board, president and chancellors.....

[SNIP]

Wisconsin has hardly been the only place where public universities have struggled in relationships with their states, and leaders elsewhere have been closely watching the events unfold in Wisconsin. As state funding for higher education has dwindled in recent years, public universities in several states have been involved in discussions over cutting,or loosening, their ties with state government,so they would not have to comply with state regulations governing areas like purchasing and construction.

....A legislative committee voted on Friday to “keep several of the flexibilities Governor Walker originally proposed, including the specific proposal regarding tenure,”....Mr. Walker’s law limiting public-sector unions in 2011 had also eliminated tenure requirements in the school system. “Today, graduation rates are up, third-grade reading scores are up, and A.C.T. scores are second-best in the country.”....

[SNIP]

...Yet in academic circles nationwide, there was concern......

...“If you just took the Wisconsin language on eliminating tenure, and moved it from the statute into board policy, you could argue that there would be no problem. But the shared governance change seems to undermine the whole structure.”

... I notice, by the way, the people who whine about this and blabber about tenure being critical aren't the least bit upset when a tenured solid Conservative is run off for some minor infraction of their PC hogwash...

Indeed. And how conservatives even get tenured?

Because Walker is less than the most conservative candidate running and once again, you are head cheerleader for such a person at the expense of the most conservative option. I also would note you deftly avoided addressing my points in the last post.

Rick Perry would have done what Rick Perry —actually did— with the border. Let more illegals cross it than his actions attempted to stop. There is no ‘would have’. There is history. He talked and talked and let more in, fought against a fence and kept his law enforcers from opposing Obama’s illegal edicts.

Again, that is history. It is not debatable or excusable. He DID what he DID.

I have no intention of rehashing this with you.

As everyone can see you’re rabid when it comes to Rick Perry.

This isn’t a Rick Perry thread.

So go find one and spew.

There is nothing to rehash. You asked a question, I answered it factually. That upsets you. No spewing involved.

Thats great. I have no issue there that a Republican did what every Reoublican should do. I am also glad he is taking it to the teachers. Which should also not be anything to brag about considering it is base dogma and has been forever.

But I am less than thrilled that he ran to the USCOc for funding, Is a Romneybot and went from pro illegal to anti legal. It makes me wonder when a USCOC guy will switch back since it is pretty obvious that the USCOC wants amnesty.

Now if you want a guy that flip flops, lets just draft Mitt as he’s better at it and people seem to ignore that in him.

And again, the above is true. A matter of record.

Right now, Cruz. If he has one more major bout of liberalism, I’m probably going to look elsewhere. For the moment, he is still on the right side of 80% and not trolling leftists for campaign cash.

It’s simple enough. I expect conservationism from conservatives. If they repeatedly vote for or partake in liberalism, then I’m out. I like Cruz but he has had a couple issues I’m not good with. Big ones. He is however, still on the right side of things I believe to be important and has a history of being on the right side of them.

And if he screws up, thats on him. I hope he hangs tough. Pols need to earn votes. No matter who they are. If they don’t, then it’s not my problem. John McCain was my last nose hold to get Palin. Never again will I make that BIG mistake.

“...the biggest problems we face today, namely the GOP and DNC.”

The GOP and DNC are not two problems. They are one party.

Correct. I hate it when people make the candidate untouchable

“Unions Subdued, Scott Walker Turns to Tenure at Wisconsin Colleges”...........

Just “weeding the garden”. It’s about time.

Many tenured parasites called professors are strikingly akin to educated “gimmedats”.

Then who’s your next, and then next, and then next candidate to be, as certainly none can possibly be perfect?

In the meantime, we’re circling the toilet.

Right now there isn’t a next one. And there probably won’t be since no one other than Cruz hits 80%. Well there’s me. I might get another vote in a presidential election. Sure I’ll lose on a write-in, but oh well.

I have no intention of voting for a liberal. You can vote for whichever liberal you like. Then, you can be ruled by one knowing you helped empowed them and in so doing, helped drive the final nail in America’s coffin. I on the other hand will stand knowing that I fought against liberalism to my final vote. And I’m good with that.

How good am I with it?

A couple months back I spent some time in an ICU in which I came extremely close to dying. Extremely close. The kind of close involving crash carts and families at the bedside. Over a period of several days I had little to do but look back over my life. It was a good life. Fortunately it still is but at the time I didn’t know how much of it was remaining. And I thought, among other things about all these tender moments shared on FR with people. And you know what I decided? I decided I don’t regret a single position I have taken. Probably because I don’t decide things lightly.

So you can bet on two things. One being that If the country goes down, It will not be with my help and two, that I will fight it every inch of the way. Along with anyone trying to bring it down with liberals in either party.

And with no regrets at all.

What I think is that My position is set and I know everything I need to in order to make that decision. I laid out my issues upthread. Nothing changes the reality of that.

I accept that Walker has good points. I accept that he has done good things. It is my opinion that his negatives put him below the Reagan 80% figure and as such, he will never get my vote.

Ever.

Well, I tried.

Sometimes you get to see something you missed when you watch people in action for one hour.

But that’s your choice.
