Read a great book by one of their spies
Washington Station. The agent said there were two things which finally made them realize the U.S. wouldn't be defeated in the Cold War:
- The Reagan landslide in 1984, showing them there would be no policy change and the Bush mini-landslide in 1988 affirming this thought process.
- Technical schematics on U.S. weaponry which they obtained from the trash collectors (mainly third world contractors who were open to the idea of earning extra income) who cleaned up around the Pentagon, Defense and other agencies in the DC area.
The book was a real eye-opener on how willing certain contacts in the press and other places such as congressional offices were willing to help the Soviets.
