Many became Catholic or otherwise converted.

It's possible to be a good scientist in a particular field and not be a Christian.

Sure, and evolution is acceptable out of the belly of Rome. Some will stick with stuck on stupid. Christ said as recorded in Mark 13:22 For FALSE Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, IF it were possible, even the elect.

23 BUT take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

That would be by necessity sola scripture forbidden by the belly of Rome. Imagine that denying Christ, was not that one of Peter's shortcomings???????
