MAUNA KEA, Hawaii —On Wednesday, hundreds of protesters forced construction crews for the Thirty Meter Telescope to come to a halt, but it didn’t come without sacrifice.In total, 12 people were arrested for obstructing the path, but after a six-hour attempt to make it to the top of the summit, TMT crews only reached about a mile and a half up from hale pohaku before turning back.
It’s been a long haul for those for and against building what will be one of the world's largest telescopes on land held sacred by many Native Hawaiians, a divided image that has been making headlines since the beginning.
But on Wednesday, that divided image softened as both protesters and DLNR officers understood what the other had to do.
"I don't want to arrest anybody. I get Hawaiian just as much as most of you guys here. I just got to do what I'm supposed to do as my job,” said Lino Kamakau, one of the DLNR officers at the scene.

Give it to the Japanese. They wanted it 75 years ago, and a lot of them vacation there. Let them pick up the welfare costs and deal with the ultra left wing politics there. It’s the only place in the USA where the bilingual signs are in Japanese and English (as opposed to Spanish and English)

Are you sure about that? What about MA and NY? Another thing is that Hawaiians have a great deal of contempt for haoles (us) Haole is pretty much the same as the n word except it lacks the friendly respectful connotation that the n word has.
OMG... C’mon people. Let’s not go off the deep end here. This scene has played out all over the country for a long long time. Protesters blocking construction crews. Protecting a tree or a owl or a mountain... It’s not an Obama thing.

Remove the AMERICAN Military and let them require a passport to travel there and tourism will drop, if tourism drops what will they do?
Give PR their independence and the virgin Islands and let them support themselves WITHOUT our money and watch them cry.
Don’t give it to the japs, then WE would have to use our military to defend it, they want independence? Let them build their own military and everything else.
