Democrats face narrow path to retake Senate in 2016
National Journal ^ | July 6, 2015 | Steven Shepherd

Democrats can take back the Senate in 2016 after a stinging, nine-seat defeat last year — but their path is narrow, and any gains could be fleeting.

The party needs to capture four or five seats — depending on the results of the presidential election — next November. While the 2016 map is favorable, flipping control of the Senate would require winning most of the toss-up races and defeating several well-funded GOP incumbents in pricey swing states that will also be crucial in the race for the White House.

It really depends on who the GOP nominee is. I think a lot us will stay home if it’s not a solid conservative. The GOPe has not done a thing they promised they would do.

I thought the Democrats did control the Senate . . . and the House.

I can see the Democrats picking up a couple of seats but they aren't going to take the Senate back.

At least Dingy Harry won’t be running next year, so we don’t have to worry about him.

I largely agree with the rankings here, with some exceptions. Colorado Republicans are caught in a scandal with their state party Chairman. Conservatives there need to encourage Scott Tipton to run.

Republicans will be defending some 24 seats, while Dems are defending about 9.

The Republican Senate leadership has not shown much to be excited about.

The path for McConnell to return to his minority leader seat is pretty broad. He sure has not shown that he had learned how to govern. All he has shown is that he can compromise — and usually end up on the short end of the compromises. He is right out of the fold and bend over mold of Frist and Lott.

With their butt boys safely ensconced and front-and-center to receive any and all blame when things go wrong, what need have they to be in charge of the Senate or the House?

The best path for the dems to retake the senate is for the republican party to run Jeb.

Send us another GOPe and people will stay home. The GOPe needs a harsh lesson.

If Bush is at the top of the ballot, the Democrats will win the Senate and the presidency.

I don’t envy you all the stupid “McConnell sucks so the rats will win” posts you’ll get pinged to.

Likely so.

After all, "what difference will it make?"

Problem is, I don’t want to vote my Republican Senators, Isakson and Perdue, either. Both of them are complete wastes of skin.

I’m reminded of something Lincoln said to one of his early feckless generals: “If you aren’t going to use my Army, may I have it back?”
The GOP-e can pound sand into rat holes. It would at least be something.

Scott Tipton would be a great candidate, but he’d be giving up what looks like a safe seat for him.

This will ultimately depend on how strong the Presidential ticket is. If our presidential nominee wins, we keep control of the Senate...which would be needed to get judges confirmed to the bench - that would be highly critical. That’s one thing that would be very distinguishable between which party has control of the Senate.
