Support for a Young Earth? Scientists Baffled by Preserved Dinosaur Blood Cells [Psalms 85:11]
CNS News ^ | 6/15/2015 | Garrett Haley

LONDON – The discovery of well-preserved blood and proteins in a supposedly 75-million-year-old dinosaur fossil has stumped secular scientists and led one Christian apologist to herald the findings as evidence of a young Earth.

A team of scientists at the U.K.’s Imperial College London carefully examined eight Cretaceous dinosaur bones discovered in North America, scrutinizing the bones’ interiors with an electron microscope. The researchers were stunned when they discovered what appeared to be red blood cells in one of the specimens.

Upon closer examination, the British scientists identified an internal structure within the dinosaur cells, complete with nuclei and amino acids. Then, in addition to the blood cells, the scientists discovered excellently-preserved collagen, which is a common soft tissue.

The scientists published their findings last week in “Nature Communications,” emphasizing that the dinosaur bones they studied were “not exceptionally preserved.”

“It has long been accepted that protein molecules decay in relatively short periods of time and cannot be preserved for longer than 4 million years,” the researchers noted. They described the discovery of preserved blood cells and soft tissue as unprecedented and “very exciting...”

Is that how the Bible defines "day"?

The bible does define the word day as having a morning and an evening based on light and dark.

And if you don't believe Genesis 1, then why bother with chapter 3 (original sin), Chapter 6 (the flood), Chapter 12 (Abraham), Genesis 46 (Israel goes into Egypt). The Bible is either "The Word of God" (all of it) or it is not. If it "Contains" the word of God, as you suggest, then man must determine which part is and is not inspired truth. Man must also then force fit his understanding of scripture with current scientific theory. BTW, science proves people dead 3 days don't come back to life, so will you re-explain that away with a swoon theory?

AMEN!

Considering that this was done under an electron microscope, how do they know that what they’re seeing is really cell tissue, and not just a molecular pattern left over from remnants of something that used to be cell tissue?

“After death, though, iron is let free from its cage. It forms minuscule iron nanoparticles and also generates free radicals, which are highly reactive molecules thought to be involved in aging. “The free radicals cause proteins and cell membranes to tie in knots,” Schweitzer said. “They basically act like formaldehyde.””

The fatal flaw in this explanation is that we don’t see this “iron preservation” in any more recent remains. Why doesn’t iron preserve soft tissue in remains that are only a few thousand years old, if it can preserve soft tissue in remains that are millions of years old? Logic dictates that there should be a much greater number of more recent remains preserved by this method, but in fact we see just the opposite.

QUOTE: "There’s are these things called education and training, and generally, the people who possess the education and training specific to any given field are the best resource for information regarding those fields."

So one could assume that you believe in global warming, the constitutional right to gay marriage, the effectiveness of the ACA and that guns kill people.

You sound like a liberal asserting that experts should never be questioned!

If God can just speak and something comes into existence, he can do it in a 24 hour period just as easily as a 24 billion year period. However, for the record, the word yôm is used in Genesis 1 and although it typically means a 24 hour period, it can have other interpretations as well. The reason why Bible scholars believe it means 24 hours in Genesis 1 is that elsewhere in the Bible, whenever yôm is used with a number, it means a twenty-four-hour period. Note as well that in Genesis 1, it very clearly states that for each day of creation, night followed the day…. the word day does therefore not have have an interpretation of an epoch of some sort….otherwise, there would be no need to mention the night.

Actually, Genesis 1 clearly states that Day follows Night. :)

Genesis 1:5 (KJV) And the evening and the morning were the first day.

The Bible was not written as a scientific document and should not be used as one. Nowhere is the Bible is the age of the earth discussed or an age given. It has been deduced from the genesis record. I know what the genealogical records but I will wait until our Heavenly Father tells me directly how old the earth is/was/will be. Actually, I probably won’t care by that time.

There are many calculations that make sense only if the earth is young (few thousand years). For instance, if the earth were any more than a few thousand years the tide would have killed every land animal twice a day. Niagara falls would be much further than it is. The moon would have 100+ feet of moon dust (now it has 1.5 inches)...

That’s correct and the night / day pattern has spiritual significance as well.

Actually, they have been looking at younger fossils and have found similar results. See: http://rspb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/274/1607/183

This is very new and has been controversial, centered mostly on Dinosaurs because because that’s where the original discovery took place.

Actually, Genesis 1 clearly states that Day follows Night. :) Genesis 1:5 (KJV) And the evening and the morning were the first day.

Thank you for that correction. It is important when God's word is referenced in a precise fashion and I didn't quite do that. Having gone to check, it is interesting that the phrase "And the evening and the morning were the ____ day." is stated exactly the same for the first 6 days. As for the 7th day in Genesis 2, there is no reference to evening and morning and it simply says "And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made." Everything is written (or excluded) for a reason..... makes one wonder what the reason is for this. Does it insinuate that a day of resting with the Lord is like Heaven? When there is no need for the sun or the moon which are tied directly to evening and morning i.e. Revelation 21:23?

Dinosaurs are mentioned in the Bible. Look closely at the description of these beasts of the earth...

Job 40: 15 Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. 16 Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. 17 He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together. 18 His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his bones are like bars of iron. 19 He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him. 20 Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play. 21 He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens. 22 The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about. 23 Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth. 24 He taketh it with his eyes: his nose pierceth through snares.

Job 41: 1 Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down ? 2 Canst thou put an hook into his nose? or bore his jaw through with a thorn? 3 Will he make many supplications unto thee? will he speak soft words unto thee? 4 Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever? 5 Wilt thou play with him as with a bird? or wilt thou bind him for thy maidens? 6 Shall the companions make a banquet of him? shall they part him among the merchants? 7 Canst thou fill his skin with barbed irons? or his head with fish spears? 8 Lay thine hand upon him, remember the battle, do no more . 9 Behold, the hope of him is in vain : shall not one be cast down even at the sight of him? 10 None is so fierce that dare stir him up : who then is able to stand before me? 11 Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him? whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine. 12 I will not conceal his parts, nor his power *, nor his comely proportion. 13 Who can discover the face of his garment? or who can come to him with his double bridle? 14 Who can open the doors of his face? his teeth are terrible round about. 15 His scales are his pride, shut up together as with a close seal. 16 One is so near to another, that no air can come between them. 17 They are joined one to another, they stick together , that they cannot be sundered . 18 By his neesings a light doth shine , and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. 19 Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out . 20 Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. 21 His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth. 22 In his neck remaineth strength, and sorrow is turned into joy before him. 23 The flakes of his flesh are joined together : they are firm in themselves; they cannot be moved . 24 His heart is as firm as a stone; yea, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone. 25 When he raiseth up himself, the mighty are afraid : by reason of breakings they purify themselves. 26 The sword of him that layeth at him cannot hold : the spear, the dart, nor the habergeon. 27 He esteemeth iron as straw, and brass as rotten wood. 28 The arrow cannot make him flee : slingstones are turned with him into stubble. 29 Darts are counted as stubble: he laugheth at the shaking of a spear. 30 Sharp stones are under him: he spreadeth sharp pointed things upon the mire. 31 He maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. 32 He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. 33 Upon earth there is not his like, who is made without fear. 34 He beholdeth all high things: he is a king over all the children of pride.

In other words .... if a “day” is not a revolution of the earth or 24 hours, and indeed is a phase.....why can’t the total of six phases be 4.5 billion years?

So explain how plants, made on the third day, survived for 'millions of years' without the sun (made on the fourth day) and without pollinators (made on the sixth day)...

It’s remarkable how close they are!

The lie always necessarily resembles the truth.

Exo 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exo 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
Exo 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:
Exo 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Why do you suppose YHWH wants us to 'remember the Sabbath'? Unlike his other holy days (practiced annually), we are to practice the Sabbath every Saturday! Why? Maybe to prevent the stupidity that comes with forgetting:

2Pe 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
2Pe 3:4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
2Pe 3:5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
2Pe 3:6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
2Pe 3:7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.

Do you suppose this passage prophetically describes Uniformitarianism?

Nowhere is the Bible is the age of the earth discussed or an age given.

Indeed, it does. The geneology is extremely important (as patriarchal lines always are). The Kinsman Redeemer necessarily must be related directly to Adam in order to be able to save all/any. The genealogy is that proof.

And the greater heresy in old earth theory: Death came into the world when Adam sinned. According to evolutionary theory, death was necessarily here long before Adam.
