The Earth could be headed for a 'mini ice age' researchers have warned.
A new study claims to have cracked predicting solar cycles - and says that between 2020 and 2030 solar cycles will cancel each other out.
This, they say, will lead to a phenomenon known as the 'Maunder minimum' - which has previously been known as a mini ice age when it hit between 1646 and 1715, even causing London's River Thames to freeze over.
The new model of the Sun's solar cycle is producing unprecedentedly accurate predictions of irregularities within the Sun's 11-year heartbeat.
It draws on dynamo effects in two layers of the Sun, one close to the surface and one deep within its convection zone.
Predictions from the model suggest that solar activity will fall by 60 per cent during the 2030s to conditions last seen during the 'mini ice age' that began in 1645, according to the results presented by Prof Valentina Zharkova at the National Astronomy Meeting in Llandudno.
The Maunder Minimum (also known as the prolonged sunspot minimum) is the name used for the period starting in about 1645 and continuing to about 1715 when sunspots became exceedingly rare, as noted by solar observers of the time.
It caused London's River Thames to freeze over, and 'frost fairs' became popular.
This period of solar inactivity also corresponds to a climatic period called the 'Little Ice Age' when rivers that are normally ice-free froze and snow fields remained year-round at lower altitudes. . .

Let's hope so.
45 watts is safely below the wattage approved by the EPA so everything will be OK.
Thanks for posting that video. Good stuff!
The 70s global cooling DID resonate ... in England where coal miners would have to work harder and longer hours for the projected increase in demand at the same pay rate ... so they asked the Gov for more money, else go on strike.
This was unacceptable to the Gov and solved by reversing the prediction to Global Warming. See the Great Global Warming Hoax, if you can find it.
After reading the article, I read the responses. Number 2 and 3 - you cracked my up! :>)
Wow...thanks !
The French get 75 percent of their electrical power from 59 nuclear reactors. In 2012 France was the biggest exporter of electricity to its European neighbors with 45 terawatt-hours.
The French decision to go all nuclear was the result of the 1973 oil crisis. At that time most of their electrical generation was from foreign oil. Prime Minister Pierre Messmer’s slogan was, “In France, we do not have oil, but we have ideas.”
Ah! Livingston and Penn!
Good stuff.
We should have some warming for the next year or so until El Nino dissipates. The AGW crowd will make the most of it, so be prepared for the alarmist headlines.
The next solar cycle may give us another break for two or three years during the maximum.
After that, get ready.
One thing that is supposed to be true of genuine science is that it is replicable.
I don’t think they open-source these models, do they?
Both at the same time, like when “Global Warming” causes droughts and rainstorms.
Never happened...burn those books...
Ha...and the museums in London and Amsterdam with multi million $ value paintings from the period....

One of my fav “Twilight Zone” Episodes is “The Midnight Sun”.
Are we freezing or burning up libs? Make up your minds!!
I’d burn them - utilize the heat.
That’s always been my favorite since I first saw it as a teen.
During spring time (and this year in early summer) in Chicago, one day you need the heat, the next the AC, and then the heat again, the other morning I needed a jacket, unusual for July. That episode resonates, lol.
And in modern times it’s amusing how it relates to “climate change”.
Zharkova and her colleagues derived their model using a technique called principal component analysis of the magnetic field observations from the Wilcox Solar Observatory in California. They examined three solar cycles-worth of magnetic field activity, covering the period from 1976-2008. In addition, they compared their predictions to average sunspot numbers, another strong marker of solar activity. All the predictions and observations were closely matched.

Thanks for link. Very illuminating.
