'It can be very dangerous around here,' says girl, 9, after teens shot in park

The three girls walked down to Riis Park on the Northwest Side to feed bread to the ducks in the lagoon, as they do every day.

It was one of their favorite spots in the Belmont Central neighborhood. But on this Wednesday evening, they were stopped by a large swath of yellow police tape across the southern edge of the park, marking off where a 16-year-old boy was shot dead and a 15-year-old boy was wounded minutes before.

"It makes me very concerned," said Karina Munoz, 16. "It makes me feel not safe anymore. It makes me feel like this could happen to me one day, or my friend."

Still, the girls said they were not surprised by the shooting.

"It can be very dangerous around here," said Jennifer Munoz, 9, who came to the park with Karina and another friend, Abby Martinez.

Steps away, at least a half-dozen evidence markers lay bunched together on the walking path and in the grass. Farther east, red police tape surrounded a black park bench. An officer placed a single evidence marker underneath it.

Police said the gunman walked up to the two boys in the 6300 block of West Fullerton Avenue about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday and opened fire, hitting both of them several times.

They were taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where the 16-year-old was pronounced dead. The other boy was in critical condition. . .

I used to live in Chicago. Was seeing a girl who lived near Riis Park. It was a nice residential area then. Sounds like that area has gone downhill.

You aren’t supposed to feed bread to ducks.

none of this is supposed to happen in the city with the most strict gun control laws, right?

If Donald Trump came out talking about blacks killing blacks, “especially in the president’s hometown”, and how he would have summits, “not a beer summit with a cop he said acted stupidly”, but real meetings with leaders in these high crime black communities and find out what needs to be done to stop these horrible shootings from happening, he’d double in the poll numbers.

But, how can this be? The evil Confederate flags, the cause of all racial strife and tension, is no more. Ding! Dong! The witch is dead! and all that.
I’m waiting for all the do-gooders to realize that nothing has changed, that it was just a piece of cloth and has no more power than what others will give it, but these are liberals, for them feelings trump reality every time, more kids will die in the cities but everyone can feel good about defeating the Rebel flag...

Yeah, 15-20 years ago, it was still a nice area. Lot of Polish immigrants but they didn’t cause trouble besides their drunken shenanigans. Now, it’s turning into another Humboldt Park around there since all the latinos moved in.

It sounds like Chicago needs more `Don’t feed the ducks!’ and `Stay off the grass you knuckleheads!” signs.
But no Confederate flags, please.
