Probe into Chattanooga shooting suspect turns to Mideast travel

U.S. authorities believe the suspect in the fatal shootings of four Marines in Tennessee visited Jordan last year and possibly Yemen as well, two U.S. government sources said on Friday, as investigators looked for any connection to Islamist militants.Mohammod Youssuf Abdulazeez, a 24-year-old Kuwait-born U.S. citizen

A little more than 24 hours after the shooting, the FBI said it continued to investigate it as an act of terrorism and that it was "premature" to speculate on the motive. Abdulazeez's travel was part of the investigation.

"We do know that he has traveled outside of the United States," Ed Reinhold, FBI Special Agent in Charge, said during a news conference.

Born to Palestinian parents and raised in a Chattanooga suburb, Abdulazeez may have family in Jordan, investigators believe, making a visit to that country highly likely, one of the sources close to the probe said. He may have made several stops, and a visit to Yemen has not been ruled out.

A trip to Yemen, long viewed as a training ground for Islamic militants, would raise special concern.

POSSIBLE TRAVEL IN 2014

Abdulazeez, who studied engineering at a local university, is believed to have traveled to the Middle East between April and November 2014, according to one of the sources, who was not authorized to speak on the record.

The SITE Intelligence Group, which tracks extremist groups, said Abdulazeez blogged on Monday "life is short and bitter" and that Muslims should not miss an opportunity to "submit to Allah."

Why is it premature to speculate about a motive in this case, when after the Charleston shooting, everyone jumped to the conclusion that a white racist attacked a black church??

Well, he only worked at a nuclear facility...

Actually, he failed their background check so they let him go after less than two weeks. How come a private company could find him suspicious, but not the DHS?

Born to Palestinian parents and raised in a Chattanooga suburb...

How many more are out there, along with their spawn, eager to flip their sudden jihad switches?

Stop fomenting trouble. We’ve been told every day since 9/11 that Islam is a religion of PEACE!

Did you not get the memo? ;)

Pretty much a non-answer...
You mention the DHS.
What are you saying he did that should put him on the DHS radar?
Traveled to the middle east?
(he never really “worked” at a nuclear plant)

“How come a private company could find him suspicious, but not the DHS?”

Is that a serious question?

It has been over 30 hours since a Muslim, 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez, gunned down seven innocent people and was himself dispatched, apparently by the local police. As usual, the media and government officials are clucking about "lack of motive", "unknown reasons", "unconfirmed speculation", and simply how down-right "normal" and "American" the killer was.

Generally, the anti-gun crowd is out front in these shootings, demanding "assault" weapons be banned and "gun-show loopholes" be immediately closed. So far, there has been very little of that. In fact, the lack of it has been striking.

There has been little discussion (either in the media or by the authorities) concerning what sort of weapon Abdulazeez used, or where he obtained it. Usually, this sort of information is front and center because it gives grist to the anti-gun mill and deflects attention away from the perp to the tool.

Maybe I missed something in the news, but this is mysterious, isn't it? Why is information about the weapon and how the authorities tracked him down and killed him so scarce? Was a genuine automatic assault rifle used? From the looks of the sprayed bullet hole pattern at the mall from a very short range, it seems likely. The fact he quickly gunned down the victims at the Reserve Center leads one to believe it was done quickly.

If he used an real automatic assault rifle, where did he get it? Was it gotten through cartel or ISIS sources? Why are the authorities so quiet about the weapon(s)? If it were simply an ugly black rifle one can buy at WalMart, why is everybody ignoring it? Wouldn't it be front page news?

The silence on this subject is deafening. Does anybody have any good clues here? But perhaps I missed them all in the past wall-to-wall 30 hours of coverage...?
