Businessman Donald Trump surged into the lead for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, with almost twice the support of his closest rival, just as he ignited a new controversy after making disparaging remarks about Sen. John McCains Vietnam War service, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Support for Trump fell sharply on the one night that voters were surveyed following those comments. Telephone interviewing for the poll began Thursday, and most calls were completed before the news about the remarks was widely reported.
Although the sample size for the final day was small, the decline was statistically significant. Still, it is difficult to predict what could happen to Trumps support in the coming days and weeks as the controversy plays out.

He should be sure to tell them, even if they don’t ask.
And Trump has reached the top of the world in business.
He's one of the guys who built this country , one of the great businessmen and entrepreneurs like Ford and Edison.
Trump has built business 50 story towers etc. What have the other lawyer idiots done given a speech. give me a break a lawyer or politician has no chance to fix this country. Only one of the businessmen the builders has that chance
I support Cruz and Jindal-—not Santorum. Last time he ran, he said something that came from a socialist worldview-—about something, and it was troubling to me. I like his abortion, etc. stand, but he doesn’t have the charisma like Cruz, nor the acerbic tongue, which is needed in today’s world and debate.
Solzhenitsyn stated that even a little bit of socialism “rots the soul”. We need to go all the way back to Constitutional Natural Rights again and dump all the systems which promote and normalize vice and dependency, etc.in our children.
I am extremely socially conservative-—since without Virtue there is no Freedom. I never could understand “Libertarianism” because even the pagans 2500 years ago, knew that civil societies can’t exist without moral/good people of Virtue and that all “Just” laws promote “public virtue” only. Justice is the Queen of Virtue.
Needless to say.....it is hard to know what Trump is doing....maybe this will make it easier for the candidates to hold conservative principles on immigration, etc. in the end. Trump seems like the hatchet man-—clearing the arena, for the real show. It is a little too early to tell. I have never thought that Trump was that conservative-—but his ideas so far are forcing Truth to the forefront—plus he attacked Common Core already. We have to get back the schools soon, to save this country.
“McCain himself says he is no hero”.
The only thing I’ve ever agreed with him on. Here’s the way Trump should handle the spat with McAmnesty. He should say “senator I’ll apology for saying you’re a not a war hero if you apology to the families of the MIAs you threw under the bus. You also need to apology to every veteran in this country for consistently throwing them under the bus on compensation and disability benefits. You can also apology to active duty for voting against military pay increases and actually voting to cut their pay a couple of years ago. Lastly, you can apology to my supporters for calling them crazy for supporting me. If you can make all these apologies I will gladly say I am sorry for misspeaking and you are a “hero”. But if can’t do that, there will be no apology coming from me. By the way the vets have my back, not yours.
yeah they were really tring to act like he had a huge drop that last night of polling. Bull. Hahahahah. I love it.
When is McCain who has done nothing to secure Arizona’s borders from criminals and illegals going to apologize for calling the 18,000 people who attended the Phoenix AZ. rally for Trump a bunch of “CRAZIES”. That is what started it all. And also, MCCain has a 20% rating on his Veterans voting. He hasn’t done much to make sure Vets
get the medical care they should, in a timely way.
McCain is alway for us getting into more wars, but doesn’t seem to care for the human
cost to our Vets and their families. Trump from the first day he got into this campaign has said in every speech he would reverse the disgraceful way Vets are taken care of
by the Veterans Administration. And I believe he is for Vets 100 Percent.
Agreed...
If O’Reilly had any sense he would not immediately call McNasty a war hero. That’s easily disapproven by official documentation. He collaborated with the enemy and I hope like hell that Trump brings it up and also his shameful record on supporting veterans, AND active duty, and for abandoning MIAs in North Vietnam. Every bit of that is documented fact.
Is someone being politically correct capable of representing your views?
No.
quote “Support for Trump fell sharply on the one night that voters were surveyed following those comments”
there’s the money quote.
Trump implodes as expected.
Aren’t those three still running?
Wasn’t his “hateful rhetoric” supposed to be his utter undoing by now?
Trump is as conservative as any republican in the field but Cruz, Jindal and Santorum. He’s a hell of a lot more conservative than RINOs Bush, Fatty Christie and Rubio.
You think Clinton and Obama represent the common man?
I don’t share that opinion.
Machiavelli stated that Truth is more hated than Lies. People throughout history, who state “Truth”-—get marginalized, killed, or exiled, like McCarthy, Socrates, Cicero, Apostles, and Machiavelli. Even the most perfect and gentle Jesus was killed for the “Truth”.
It has always been so——people (the ignorant masses) would rather hear lies and rhetoric, rather than Truth.
Hitler was all rhetoric and lies and look how well he did. Only a few are out of Plato’s Cave——always been just a few....but the truth does have a special ring to it.
Marxists hate truth more than anyone. Truth is like the Light is for cockroaches, for “Truth will set you Free.”
He's at 25% and has double the support of either Bush or Walker.
One thing this will do is dry up money for the true vanity candidates...Graham, Perry, Huckabee...and even some "favored" candidates like Cruz and Rubio.
So far, that's a service that should be appreciated. The vanity candidates are stalking horses for Bush.
The 3 you mentioned are running.
Illegal aliens are allowed to vote? If so, we are already past the point of no return.
