When the US Constitution was ratified slavery was legal, even codified. So was the USA, in its nascent form, also evil in your opinion?

To varying degrees, the early republic was morally problematic. There is a big difference between that, however, and between a political ideology whose sole function is not only the preservation of enslavement of the black race, but the expansion of slavery as far and wide as possible. Yes, the confederacy—as a political movement and as a guiding ideology—was evil. I would expand on this to say its architects and its leaders were also evil.
