New Yorkers are proving to be cost conscious when choosing a private health insurance plan from New York State of Health, the marketplace created by the Affordable Care Act, which has now enrolled more than 10 percent of state residents.
Of the 2.1 million enrollees, 415,352 chose a private plan, 1,568,345 signed up for Medicaid and 159,716 enrolled in Child Health Plus, according to an enrollment report released Wednesday by the state's health department.
Other highlights from the report:
- The state's call center handled calls in 92 different languages and dialects.
- Two-thirds of those who purchased a private health insurance plan relied on an in-person assister for help with the application.
- 307,206 New Yorkers who purchased private plans with federal subsidies received about $811 million.
- Brooklyn and Queens make up more than 25 percent of all private insurance enrollees in the state, and nearly 40 percent of all Medicaid enrollees.

Train wreck is the perfect analogy.
19.3% private insurance
73.2% Medicaid
07.5% a policy for just children (say what?)
Out of 2.143 million purchasers, not 1 in 5 could pay their own way for adult coverage.
The government thus pays 100% of the costs of the insurance for 1.568 million, or 73.2% of the people who signed up for a plan.
To a Liberal, this is a reasoned plan.
This is going to beat to death state budgets.
Stay tuned.
This is going to beat to death state budgets.
GOODIE!
Can’t argue with that. By then a massive amount of damage will have been done to the health care system though.
States won’t go down without destroying your and my health care to hand it to others.
I had the same impression reading this. They constantly talked about “markets” and “customers” and doing the math - 82% of the enrollees are just signing up for more free sh** from the Government.
What’s even worse is the crony-capitalist health-care companies talking about “the market.”
The more I hear about Obamacare, I realize its just a government / corporate screw job, until the socialists finally decide they don’t need the companies any longer and simply nationalize or push them out.
So 106,146 paid for NobamaCare out of their own pocket.
Out of 2.1 million.
Barely 5% of enrollees paid for it themselves.
And if Brooklyn and Queens made up such a huge proportion of the total enrollees, can fraud be far behind?
And how many citizens were counted in that collection of 92 languages?
Admittedly, my little town in Texas doesn't resemble either the Brooklyn or Queens, but my visits there indicate a certain sophistication of the populace in their understanding of public welfare benefits.
Just an observation.
This is why places like NY State and the Federal government need to go bankrupt, and soon.
They will destroy anything left of ideas of limited government, property rights, or civil society if they go on much longer.
Thanks for pointing that out. I missed it. It was reported in such a way to facilitate that IMO.
Glad you caught it.
So.. only 100,000 are not getting subsidized??
Ain’t it great? This is “affordability” to a liberal.
Greece and Puerto Rico are full of affordability right now
For English, enter 1. For Spanish, enter 2. For French, enter 3. For German, enter 4. Et cetera, et cetera.
What I’d like to know is how all these people on subsidies can pay the copays, coinsurance, and deductibles. Bronze plans are $5000+, right?
If they are between 138% and 250% of FPL they get additional cost sharing reductions on deductibles and copays if they buy the silver plan. A bronze plan might cost nothing or just a few bucks a month, but they get no break on deductibles and copays. The older one is, the larger the subsidies..
