Deadly shooting during live TV news report in Va.

A gunman killed a reporter and videographer for a CBS affiliate in Virginia in a shooting that was broadcast live Wednesday morning.
Alison Parker and Adam Ward, a reporter and cameraman for CBS Roanoke affiliate WDBJ-TV, died in the shooting, Parker's mother confirmed to CBS News.
WDBJ-TV reports that deputies from Franklin County and Bedford County were on the scene.
The shooting happened at Bridgewater Plaza in Moneta, Virginia.

Not so much I think. This is a nice little shopping center/amusement park/marina area on Smith Mountain Lake. Son used to live there a few years ago.

Also, announcing that they had died before notifying next of kin was an anomaly. Watching the video one could not immediately be sure someone had died.

No, but talking with police (as they say they did) is enough. They did not indicate that next of kin hadn't been contacted.

In a strange way, if this guy is caught.. the cameraman was instrumental in finding his own killer. I just keep thinking with it being so early (and not seeing a lot of people around), the killer could have gotten away with little evidence behind. The police have a picture of the killer... accidentally or deliberately by the cameraman.
