Iran has called on the United States on Wednesday to release 19 Iranians serving in US jails on sanction-related offenses, a day after Tehran rejected reports of a prisoner swap involving detained Washington Post correspondent Jason Rezaian.
“We call on American government and their judicial officials to put an end to the detention of these individuals,” said Marzieh Afkham, a foreign ministry spokeswomen Marzieh Afkham.
“None of the human rights institutions, including the United Nation, have followed up on the situation of Iranian prisoners.”
The statement came as Hassan Qashqavi, a deputy foreign minister, announced Tuesday that Iran has no plan to swap prisoner with the US.
Qashqavi claimed, in addition to the 19 Iranians held in the US for sanctions-related charges, 60 other Iranians are currently in US prisons for non-political offenses.
"The reports on the possible swap of prisoners are not true and it is not on the table," Qashqavi said to reporters. He rejected any links related to the Rezaian case.
On August, a court held its fourth and final hearing in the Rezaian trial but the verdict has yet to be released.
Rezaian’s defense lawyer, Leila Ahsan, had earlier said the verdict was expected a week after trail.
Rezaian, his wife Yeganeh Salehi and two photojournalists were arrested on July 22, 2014 in Tehran. All were set free except Rezaian, a dual-citizen Iranian-American facing charges of “espionage, collaboration with hostile governments, gathering classified information and disseminating propaganda against the Islamic Republic.”
If convicted on espionage, he could face a 20-year jail sentence.
Rezaian is among four Americans held in Iran. The others are former FBI agent Robert Levinson, former US Marine Amir Hekmati and Christian pastor Saeed Abedini.
They won’t apologize for holding Americans hostage.
That’s the problem.

What a slap in he face to this country. Iran made this insult KNOWING that not only would they get away with issuing it, they may very well get their terrorist citizens released - and all without even having to acknowledge the innocent Americans they are illegally holding in Iran.

I hear ya. I have to be very careful around family members. Some of the self-professed Conservatives are the worst. They don’t grasp there is another level they are unaware of.

I don’t think we should do that, no matter how many times it occurs to us when they do dastardly things.
What I think would send a great message, is to drop these guys so they go crashing down through the roof of their bedroom while they sleep.

We need to observe the rule of law. When they don’t, let it be on them. Just don’t ever let them forget it.
Take some punitive action and make them pay dearly for it.
Start taking out their nuclear program one site at a time.
