I need some remedial education. Please recite Henker’s Law.

My take on it is that the events of a given time preclude any possiblity of there having been an alternate history.

Homer, thank-you again for the dedication, time and effort it took to create this series. I am indebted to you for the knowledge this brought. It is deeply appreciated.

Henkster’s law: An alternate history is not valid if it involves the major actors not being themselves in character or attitude, or the peoples they lead acting substantially out of their national character. A possible corollary is the obvious “or if it involves the use of a technology that was not yet available.” (Napoleon having a squadron of A-10 Warthogs at Waterloo.)

It does not preclude the possibility of an alternate history but significantly narrows its scope.

I had seen some statements of the gist of henkster’s law before, but what really prompted me to “codify” it was a discussion of Operation Barbarossa on the History Channel back in the late 1990s. One poster made the argument I’d seen so many times before; that the Germans could have defeated the USSR if only they had a more benevolent attitude toward the Russians and especially the Ukrainians.

Apply henkster’s law to that alternate reality and you see it’s proof. The whole point of Hitler’s regime and it’s invasion of the USSR was the brutal subjugation of the slavs. It wasn’t possible for it to be otherwise.

Harpers Weekly? Once a week is that to much?

Hmm. Harper's Weekly is available on line. From 1858. The Lincoln-Douglas debates began in August 1858. Recordings of reenactments of those debates are also available. We could have a really good 7-year journey through the War Between the States, Week by week or month by month, depending on the slow periods. Three years to prepare gives us time to get up to speed by reading up on the background history. I'm down for it! Now we just need to identify a facilitator. It wouldn't be nearly as labor intensive as my WWII thing if everybody contributed the materials.

What do y'all think?

It would be awesome, as long as the project isn’t too taxing on you.

Doing Harper's for the Civil War starting in 1858 with the Lincoln-Douglas debates would be fantastic!

The main problem with doing this on the Civil War is that the threads would get very contentious. We were all in agreement on WWII, that won't be the case with the Civil War.

Enforceable anti-trolling rules should keep things from spinning out of control. It occurs to me that such a project would be a great homeschooling resource. Those lucky students who were just at the stage where they could appreciate the history at the beginning could follow project until they are ready for college. The fact that there are still warm feelings on the subject 160 years later would add spice to the experience.

The Carolina Reaper is officially the Worlds Hottest Pepper as ranked by Guinness Records. There is nothing normal about this pepper. It was bred for heat and that it is with an average SHU of over 1.5 million and peaks at 2.2 Million SHU! Just looking at it, you know its one mean pepper. It gets this insane heat from being a cross between a Pakastani Naga and a Red Habanero.

:-)

Once the war started, the contentious politics are over. It is just a meat grinder to the end. Not really political at all.

I think the Civil war week by week would be even more popular then the WWII daily. My guess anyway.
