We have done nothing to “deserve” them.
Dogs are living proof of God’s wonderful mercy.
What else can explain such an incredible gift that is a dog?
Thank you for the ping, Joe.
And thank you for this post. Rescue dogs are truly angels. I watched documentaries about how they helped the troops in WWI ... there was one dog, I think it was a St Bernard from Nova Scotia or Newfoundland...he helped the Canadian troops by running onto a grenade... catching it in his mouth and running as far away as he could.
All of the men were wounded and couldn’t move..couldn’t reach the grenade that was just lying beyond their reach. But that dog knew that those men threw those egg-shaped objects as far away from them as they could.
So that’s what he did. He grabbed it in his mouth and took off... and saved the lives of at least a dozen men.
He is, I think, the first dog awarded honors by the Canadian military.
And then to think of how many dogs have helped wounded soldiers, have provided unconditional love...
Just as that girl did, too. What a sweet girl. She reminds me of the golden I had when I was a teenager. Her name was Buffy, and I taught her how to “fetch” the newspaper at the end of the driveway and she did it well into my college years, until she couldn’t walk anymore.
She has earned her place in Heaven. Right next to my Buffy, my Claudius (Black Lab), my Samantha (a gorgeous Samoyed)...my Patches (a shelter mix), my Zoey (another shelter mix), my Merly-moo (Merlin, a shelter Chow mix that we had to put down because of severe aggressiveness around my then year-old son)... We tried everything, doggy anti-depressants, classes, etc.... but when he snapped at Chris... after so many other aggressive incidents (including, even as a puppy, scaring the heck out of Claudy (Claudius), who was a lot older than he was).
And someday, not soon, I hope, our Black Lab Ellie, who is two and just kind of getting the ropes about how to behave with so much energy. ;)
God bless dogs!! They are amazing creatures. A real gift from the Creator.
Wow! I just read the article.
What a great thing that woman did, with Bretagne.
I read stories about regular people who took their dogs to Haiti after the earthquake, just to help out.
Amazing people with amazing dogs!
That woman and Bretagne should get some sort of official recognition from NYC, or better yet, from the federal government. A plaque of some sort. Maybe even a pic of the two with Rudy Guiliani and GW Bush! :) Now that would be something to treasure. Maybe someone can make it happen.
Soon, since that girl is on in years for a retriever...
One can hope....
Love those quotes. :)

So true... :)
Let me add... my Buffy kept getting the paper for my parents as they aged and my mom got cancer. Even when she (Buffy) was in a lot of pain (her hips).
And when I said, “she has earned her place in Heaven,” I meant Bretagne. :)
Anyway, I think we all agree that dogs are the best and one of the greatest gifts man has ever received from God. Pure, simple, unconditional love.

GOOD GIRL, Daddy Loves You.
Hugs and pets.
My dog Charity is 15.5 years old and she takes no prescription medications. Still can run and jump with ease.
She is either a German shepherd, Shiloh shepherd, or a combination of both.
