BERLIN— Volkswagen AG Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn resigned Wednesday in the wake of a developing emissions scandal that has stunned the auto industry and slashed the car maker’s market value.

“Volkswagen needs a fresh start—also in terms of personnel,” Mr. Winterkorn said. “I am clearing the way for this fresh start with my resignation.”

Mr. Winterkorn said that he accepted responsibility for the irregularities found in diesel engines and has asked the supervisory board to agree to his stepping down. He said, however, that he wasn't aware of any wrongdoing on his part.

There's a lot of this whole VW scandal I'm not quite getting. But with 11 million vehicles being affected and billions of dollars in losses projected (shares down 20% Monday, another 19% Tuesday), this is shaping up to do some serious harm to VW.

They used the engine’s computer to detect when a “test” was being done and ran the engine in a very clean mode.

The engine doesn’t run that way when actually being driven.

In other words, they designed the engine control software to cheat on the test.

Hopefully, if a Republican wins the Presidency, Winterkorn will be appointed to head the EPA.

I guess this was to deliver higher miles per gallon. Unfortunately, this flap will cause decades of damage to VW’s reputation.

Someone VW's engineering department is probably looking at jail time.

From Wiki....

Volkswagen emissions violations

In September 2015, Volkswagen admitted to using illegally installed software to change emissions test results for 11 million of its diesel engine cars sold between 2009 and 2015. The deception resulted in engines passing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards and yet having vehicles emitting up to 40 times the legal limit of nitrogen oxides. The company has apologized for creating the emissions scandal while the disclosures have brought into question whether VW diesel engines were actually cleaner for the environment than regular gasoline engines.

The software "defeat device" came to light after a series of investigations of Volkswagen's diesel engines by the EPA and the California Air Resources Board. The scrutiny focused on Volkswagen AG's use of engine control unit firmware programming techniques in vehicles equipped with TDI diesel engines to skirt vehicle emissions compliance laws in the United States.

Seems like their 1960s ad is still affecting at least one person.

is that admitted or proven?

I am worried this is another shakedown like Toyota and the ‘sudden acceleration’ HOAX.

They fined Toyota a billion dollars for that and it was a complete hoax.

I own a Jetta TDI, but it predates the “clean diesels”. It is a 2006.
Even though it probably pollutes the same as, or more than, the vehicles that will be included in the recall, it will be deemed kosher.

When you have higher emissions, you need to use exhaust scrubbing systems. Passing this test, VW was allowed to omit the exhaust scrubbers.

regarding the Toyota HOAX- they even had one moron who claimed his car would not stop accelerating and they had to have a cop car pull in front of him on the thruway and apply his brakes to stop the car.

Apparently he was too stupid to turn the key off. It would be a HUGE issue if turning the key off would not turn off the car.

And they later found (via the cars ‘black box’) that he was applying the accelerator himself.

And they STILL fined Toyota... The japanese should have told Obama to go F himself.

I said it before, when Obama took over GM... He did not have to take over ALL the auto companies to get total government control, only one- then use the power of the government to put the others out of business. I am surprised this did not go much further in the auto industry takeover.
