House Ways and Means Committee chairman Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) will not run for the House Speakership unless conservatives surrender “unconditionally” to him, Politico reports citing sources close to Ryan.
“The conservatives who drove out Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) would need to get behind him unconditionally for speaker,” Politico’s Jake Sherman writes of the donor-class-backed Ryan.
Ryan does not want to run for Speaker, he and his spokesman Brendan Buck have made “abundantly clear,” Sherman writes—before noting what exactly it would take for Ryan to get in the race.
“But there’s one remote scenario, people close to him say, in which Ryan would consider abandoning his long-laid career plans and go for the speakership: if he was the true consensus choice of the party. That means no opposition, no sniping, no acceding to demands in exchange for support,” Sherman wrote.
That full blown surrender to Ryan is never going to happen, though, according to House Freedom Caucus chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC)—the only House conservative who opposed Boehner remaining in the Speakership and current Majority Leader Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) ascending to the speakership. Jordan never publicly opposed Boehner, but he did publicly oppose McCarthy’s failed attempt to ascend.

“people close to him say ...” Always skeptical of statements by people who claim to be in the know; frequently they seem to be more interested in adding fuel to the fire than providing information.
Having said that, Ryan is NOT the man (or woman) for the job. As a tax and policy wonk, his best use to the Party (and the nation) is his current position as House Ways and Means chairman where hopefully he can steer the Congress away from the deficit-ridden budget process and revise tax policy. Hurling verbal bombs at the man does not help in that task.
We have a de jure republic, but a de facto despotism.
Just keep voting.
He’s right regarding the next Speaker needing the enthusiatic and unanamous support of Conservatives. Having Pelosi and the Democrats know that the caucus is unified and strong is critical to advancing the Conservative agenda.
So I won’t fault Ryan for asking for, even demanding this. It’s an absolute necessity in order to do the job and it’s smart for any candidate for the position to demand it.
It’s just that Ryan isn’t the guy. The situation in the House is such a mess thanks to Boehner, Cantor and McCarthy I don’t know who is. I’m increasingly thinking that there should be a figurehead placed in the position and have the real power vested in a Majority Leader replacement for McCarthy (assuming he leaves).
Paul Ryan is not what we need. He’s hardly an improvement over Boehner. Another sellout.

Ryan is full-out and soberly for amnesty.

Ryan will not get any more support than McCarthy got unless he makes several concessions to both Conservative and anti-amnesty members.
The most important concession being not to bring any bill containing amnesty to the floor unless a majority of the GOP caucus supports the bill (the Hastert Rule). Ryan will never concede to this (knowing that nowhere near half the GOP caucus will ever support an amnesty bill) and for this alone will not get to 218 votes for speaker, unless he gets several democRats to cross party lines to vote for him.
Time for the GOP to find another consensus candidate for Speaker who will actually fight Obama and also use the Hastert Rule on unpopular legislation like any that would give amnesty to illegals. Either that or consider maybe bringing Newt back as Speaker for the rest of this Caucus. He will at least fight Obama.
Hopefully he won't get his treasonous little-girl hands on the Speaker's gavel.
