Syria's leading Kurdish militia and several Arab rebel groups that have fought alongside it have formalised their alliance in a new group called the Syrian Democratic Forces.
The formation of the alliance comes after Washington said it was abandoning a plan to train and equip rebels to fight the Islamic State group and could provide the US with a new partner in the battle against the jihadist group.
The alliance was announced in a statement published online by a spokesman for the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG).
"The sensitive stage through which our country Syria is passing and the rapid developments on the military and political front ... require a united national military force for all Syrians, including Kurds, Arabs and Syriacs and all others," the statement said.
The alliance includes several Syrian rebel groups that have backed the YPG in battles against IS, including the mostly-Arab Burkan al-Furat group.
Groups representing Arab tribes and Syriac Christians are also listed as participating in the new force.

Are these Obie from Nairobi's guys?
Well, I hope whatever the Kurds are doing they don’t find their way onto the Russian radar..
I’m in full support of the Russians completely devastating and disintegrating every aspect of Al Qaeda and ISIS over there...
Obama has totally screwed us over there and at this point the less we do the better...
Russians are the good guys here and so are the Kurds - hopefully they are paying attention..
Russia 2015 is not Russia 1985... Move on ....
We are now the bad guys, sadly...
The US has repeatedly suckered the Kurds for support then screwed them and stabbed them in the back, including allowing Turk airstrikes on them using US assets. It is certain that both the US and Turkey are using the Kurds for cover and legitimization AGAIN, and will double cross them again.
Interestingly, whenever possible, Assad tolerated and protected Syrian Kurds and Christians.
Fox radio news reported the 50 ton air drop went to the Kurds.
If the supplies were attached to the chutes I saw on the news they were picked up by ISIS in their territory.
I don’t share your suspicions that we’re intentionally helping ISIS. But Fox news later issued an official denial to their report that the drop was made to the Kurds becuase the Turks wouldn’t like it and reported it was received by (unidentified) friendlys .
I suppose someone will say FOX NEWS is in the bag for Obama now.
Assad repressed the Kurds. They do not like him at all.
The main intention of Russias intervention in Syria is to prop up the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad and to do that Russia is seeking to ensure that the Islamic State (I.S.) is the only alternative to Assads regime. If the conflict becomes binaryAssad or I.S.nobody can support I.S., and by default it will be accepted that Assad has to stay; even if international help is not given to put down the insurgency at that point, tacit support and political legitimacy will be extended to Russias effort to keep its client regime alive.
In service of this mission, Moscow has consistently targeted the moderate rebels and even some non-moderate rebels, while avoiding I.S., in the conscious hope that the rebel positions it destroys will be replaced by I.S. fighters. In northern Syria in the last few days, Russia got its wish in a major way.
