South Ossetian Leader Proposes Referendum On Joining Russia

T he separatist leader of South Ossetia has proposed holding a referendum on whether the Georgian breakaway region should join Russia.

Leonid Tibilov said reuniting with Russia "is a century-long dream of the South Ossetian people," in comments quoted by the Interfax news agency on October 19 after talks with Russian presidential aide Vladislav Surkov.

Tibilov said he was sure the public and political leaders would support the idea.

Tibilov and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an "alliance and integration treaty" in Moscow on March 18.

That pact was denounced by both the European Union and the United States.

Moscow had signed a similar deal with another Georgian breakaway region, Abkhazia, in December 2014.

South Ossetia declared independence from Georgia in 1990 and has run its own affairs since a 1991-1992 war with the central government.

Russia recognized it as an independent nation after fighting a five-day war against Georgia in 2008, but few countries have followed suit.

While Jimmy Carter, Trump, and Obama make nice with Putin, Putin and Russia are invading, occupying, and annexing territories belonging to Georgia and the Ukraine in defiance of the Charter of the United Nations.

Point taken, was it a military occupation as alluded to or a co-operative model to deal with internal issues with their own seperatists

asking not stating...

The media has been lying for so long I disregard them as any full time vessel of truth and doing proper research takes you far beyond their realm of influence.

“I believe they are asking him in as did Syria...”

No, Putin and Russia invaded, occupied, annexed, and conquered the sovereign territories of Georgia in violations of international law for which the German NAZI leadership were convicted and hung for crimes against peace at the Nuremberg Military Tribunal. The international community recognizes South Ossetia and Abkhazia to be the sovereign territories of Georgia under illegal Russian occupation.

If the Muslim invasion of europe keeps going other European countries may end up with no choice but to invite Putin in to kick the invaders out.

Do you really think we’re stupid?? Save the self-righteous indignation, and stick to the FACTS, K?

Just 20 seconds of Googling will tell you that the Georgia-Ossetia conflict is unresolved issues left over from the breakup of the Soviet Union.

It was called the Georgia-South Ossetia war in 1991-1992.

When Mikheil Saakashvili (Same guy that is now the Governor of Odessa in Ukraine, Weird, weird, weird) took power in Georgia, he vowed to bring the breakaway regions of Georgia that didn’t recognize the government under control.

He succeeded in bringing one back, but when he went after Ossetia they screwed up and disarmed a bunch of Russian soldiers.

This non existent country of “South Ossetia” is a Russian invention that they need to control both ends of the only tunnel through Caucasus mountains.

Russia set up a gangster regime there living on Russian subsidies and collecting toll from the Roki tunnel usage. The whole Russian propped “government” there consists of KGB operatives. Before the 2008 war the only time this region got mentioned in the news was due to them having a printshop making high quality fake dollars - all under the control of Russians and yet giving them some plausible deniability.
