If FBI moves to 9mm, what happens to the .40 cal Pistols?

Demilled Smith & Wesson Revolver

The Smith & Wesson revolver shown above was paid for by U.S. taxpayers.  It was a finely crafted piece of machinery that served its country of origin well.  It is legal to own in all 50 states, by nearly all citizens.  But the Clinton administration chose to pay additional tax dollars to reduce it to this sad pile of scrap.  The destruction likely occurred at Anniston Army Depot.

The General Services Administration (GSA) has issued a solicitation from the FBI for a unrestricted number of 9mm pistols worth up to 85 million dollars.  From GSA:

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is issuing an unrestricted solicitation for various 9mm luger pistols and all associated replacement parts with the intent of making single award of a fixed price indefinite-delivery indefinite-quantity (IDIQ) contract. In accordance with FAR 2.101, Multi-Agency Contracts, this solicitation includes a provision authorizing other law enforcement agencies to utilize the contract on a case-by-case basis with prior approval. The anticipated period of performance consists of one (1) base year and nine (9) possible additional one-year options.

It is worth noting that the offers are to be received in late January of 2016, so that receipt of the pistols will be either after, or at the very tail end of the Obama administration.

Will the Administration following the Obama administration be a rerun of the Clinton's, where a hundred million dollars of valuable firearms were destroyed to make a political statement?

The ballistics of .40 are awesome, but sold out pistol and ammo some time back due to envisioned scarcity of ammo. In a crunch, 9mm, .45 and .22 will be available through barter, etc., but finding .40 will be tough. Have told people this for years (just like everything else). Oh well...

It's not like the fbi is a standing army or something ...

why in the world do they need a complete armament re-outfitting ?

More likely some kind of Austrian pistol.

They replaced the 9s due to desire for better performance long ago. I guess they decided the FBI was the enemy now too.

Next up, we issue super computers to every IRS agent and a list of anyone who ever signed onto FR.

Maybe sell them to ISIS or drug gangs. that seems to be the trend these days.

I have a Baretta 96 in .40 and am quite well pleased with the performance. Althought I prefer my .45 the .40 has similar ballistics and was to by the hybrid between the 9mm and .45.

Wait, scratch that... lost them both in a rather sudden and tragic boating accident.

They're just standardizing their ammo for the upcoming insurrection/civil war.

I'm sure Barry would love to break Bubba's record. The problem is, there just aren't that many mothballed military firearms left to destroy. The "newer" ones are probably M-16s, which are generally disposed of by donations to Mexican military/cartels, ISIS, etc.

I wonder how many 1911s, Garands, 1903s and M1 Carbines have been placed in the hands of the public by DCM/CMP over the years?

The .45 ACP was designed to stop drugged up Muslims in their tracks. Seems like the right choice now.

All the government needs to do to create a shortage of ammo is to let out a contract for multimillions of .40 or any caliber.
Government contracts must be fulfilled before civilian sales. So, little ammunition is found on retail shelves. As we know, the Imam in Chief has declared war on ammo as well as guns.

The .40 is over-pressured, inaccurate, and a solution to a problem that never really existed.

9mm and 45 auto have always been more than capable of doing their job, if the shooter does theirs (hit the vitals).

I have guns in many calibers (don't have a .40 yet) for the simple reason I want to be able to make use of whatever ammo I can get my hands on.

The article assumes the .40s will be surplused but I dont see any govt generated docs saying that’ll be the case. The only documentation is they want 9s. Why is anyones guess because the GSA contract is only a solicitation. Anyone *know* why the FBI wants 9s and whether they’ll be replacing existing .40s?

As I recall, it had to do with the fact that FBI agents don’t shoot very well. It was determined that the extra rounds a 9mm magazine carries, over a .40, would be a great benefit.
