NASHVILLE -- A Tennessee lawmaker plans to ask Gov. Bill Haslam this week to work to "suspend all efforts" to settle Syrian refugees in the state following last Friday's terror attacks in Paris.
Rep. Sheila Butt, R-Columbia, is asking colleagues in an email to sign a letter in an effort to persuade fellow Republican Haslam to agree in the wake of the attacks which according to news accounts killed at least 129 people.
The self-proclaimed Islamic State has claimed credit for the coordinated assaults.
In her email, Butt said "Tennesseans are mourning this week with the people of Paris." She said "we understand completely the sense of helplessness, despair and dread after the terrorist attack on our own state in Chattanooga in July of this year.
"Four Marines and a Sailor were brutally and defenselessly shot and killed and other servicemen and a police officer were wounded," Butt's letter notes. "Many lives changed drastically that day. We still feel the violation and the loss."
The lawmaker said that while Tennessee has "historically welcomed immigrants we understand that our first priority at this time must be to protect the safety of the people in Tennessee."
Citing multiple news agencies that a Syrian passport, found at the site of one of the attacks, matches a refugee who entered Europe through Greece, Butt's letter says "we respectfully and urgently request that you suspend all efforts to settle any Syrian Refugees in Tennessee, through any agencies, until the U.S. Department of Homeland Security completes a full review of security clearances and procedures."
She adds that "proper security vetting is an extensive process and can take up to a year or more and it is very questionable whether Syria even has a database which would allow the refugees to be vetted properly."
On Sunday, Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley and Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder announced they are opposing any efforts to locate Syrian refugees in their states.
"I will not stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm's way," Bentley said in a statement. "We refuse Syrian refugees."
In September, the Obama administration was willing to accept at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in the next fiscal year as Europe deals with the massive influx of fleeing refugees from war-ravaged areas of the Middle East and Africa.
One dem governor - from NH - has announced a ban. Now up to 15 states as of a couple of minutes ago as stated on CNN.
Quite a surprise. That.
Meanwhile, Gov of Missouri (Dem) no where to be found...
Walker of WS has said “Ban”..
I was a little surprised, too. But maybe with the tv coverage of the fact some of the terrorists slipped in as “refugees”, the point is getting across even to the dems.
Don’t give up hope on your governor yet. I believe the heat is on all across the country with constituents hammering their governors about this.
Haslam is a liberal puke. He’ll do nothing.
The list is growing fast. Now to see if Haslam joins the list of bans. It just ticks me off he hasn’t done it already.
The media, especially Nashville media, HATES Rep. Sheila Butts with a burning passion.
Intend to ‘ask’??? It is time for we the people to order the elected scum to do as we say. Stop the invasion NOW. Ask? ... Rails, tar and feathers, or perhaps rope and trees come to mind when these verminous elected weenies aid and abet the invading enemies.
Haslam is almost Syrian himself albeit Christian
He would have been a Democrat in the 70s
My state, Maryland, of course, has not refused. Hopefully, they won’t settle in my town.
Of course they do. They hate all Conservatives. I imagine Haslam hates her, too, because she stands up to him and gets in his face at times ...... like this time. I know he doesn't like my rep. for that reason.
My rep., David Alexander, wasn't at his business this afternoon but I spoke to his wife a bit. She said David had already emailed Haslam with his feelings on the issue and told me what he'd said. I don't have his permission to post it online but suffice it to say, it was a doozy. Better than I'd hoped for. I startled his wife when I cheered. LOL! By the time I'd gotten there, I'd heard Haslam's wussy statement announced on the radio and I told her what he'd said. We both grumbled and groused a while about it.
True. He seems to really love Muslims. He did post this morning that TN joined the states that want to refuse entry of Syrians but he said “until the states have more input into the vetting process”. We don’t need them here.
Don’t expect an answer.
Can you imagine what will happen with these fanatics and our Memphis gang bangers?
They are already in Nashville and Memphis, and they will spread out to the smaller cheaper to live cities.
The only way to put pressure on RINO Halsam is to put the pressure on all the senators and reps.
That is a tedious process. I’ve done it,1 by 1 with a copy paste letter.
You can forget Corker and Lamar they have their noses so far up 0’s butt it’s not funny.
Not unless you put the pressure on the senators and reps, RINO halsam cares for noting but power and money from DC.
Reminds me of Taxquist during the Tax Riots.

I saw this morning that Haslam ASKED the feds not to send any refugees to TN.
Asking doesn't get it. He needs to say TN REFUSES Syrian refugees.

This is the mass Senator Email I sent out. I had to copy each persons email and used a sticky note to put them on. Then Copied them to a email with the following letter. They are taking heat up there. Sen. Graham has already emailed back they are working on it.
Please use the power of your office to prevent the Governor from importing these refugees into Tennessee. Send the ones he has already accepted back to Washington DC and let the Military and Obama deal with them.
You are sending them to the most crime riddled city of Memphis, and to Nashville from there they will spread out into other communities with their diseases and their fanatic ideology. Tennesseans object to this, and want you to listen to us. We fear what is going on in Paris and Germany with these ‘refugees’ we do watch the news and read news papers from all over the world. When you get to the house members the first on is a mussie. I’d just skip him.
They are destroying Paris and Germany.
We do not need another 9/11 or a Paris or Germany happening in Tennessee. You are responsible for what happens in Tennessee. And Responsible to the voters.
He did not tell them to REMOVE the ones he already accepted for Memphis hot bed of crime and gangs or Nashville.
What did you expect for a out going RINO?
