Texas State University student shot, killed at student housing complex, 3 gunmen on the loose

A sophomore at Texas State University died after being shot at an apartment complex near the campus early Sunday morning.

Justin Douglas Gage, 20, died at University Medical Center-Brackenridge several hours after being shot in the torso and upper arm at The Retreat, an official student housing partner of Texas State Athletics located at 512 Craddock Avenue, less than two miles from campus.

Police said he had gone into an apartment at the complex shortly before 3:30 a.m. with a friend. When the two went inside, they were followed by three men wearing masks, one of whom brandished a gun.

According to police, a struggle for the weapon began between Gage’s friend and one of the suspects. At some point during the struggle, Gage was shot.

The three suspects ran away from the apartment, while the two victims gave chase. The pair stopped, however, when Gage realized he had been hit, according to SMPD.

He collapsed in the parking lot of the complex, police said.

Emergency responders arrived and took Gage to the hospital for treatment.

Police said he was in surgery for most of the morning, but never regained consciousness.

SMPD spokeswoman Kristi Wyatt said officers are searching for the three suspects, but have yet to take anyone into custody.

According to SMPD, several similar robberies have been reported in San Marcos, most of which took place at apartment complexes and involved drugs.

“Police believe there is a threat to the public because the suspects have yet to be identified and are still at large,” SMPD said in a release. “Detectives believe the suspects target drug dealers, but could also target others if given an opportunity.”

Anyone with information on the suspects is asked to call Detective Sandra Spriegel at 512-753-2369.

What is the TSU campus like?

Has there been lots of violence on and around the TSU campus?

These students should have been armed. San Marcos and Austin are dangerous cities, full of illegal aliens and drug addicts. Students are sitting ducks for these predators.

It is usually a pretty good school with a reputation for partying. I went to school there and NEVER experienced the partying much less a murder.

Sounds like a drug deal gone bad.

I am supposed to be on the look out for three suspects that are described as . . .? A clear description would be useful.

For some reason they prefer to be called TXST rather than TSU. It was formerly South West Texas State. It is a beautiful campus with a river running through it.

To it’s everlasting shame it was the school attended by LBJ.

I once dated a real cutie who attended there.

Probably about the same as most universities today.

My son has been there numerous times for summer camps and it seemed like a relatively safe place in small to medium size town of about 50,000.

When I was there the co-eds outnumbered the guys by 5 to 1.

I hang my head in shame because of LBJ and his wife Lady Bird.

One thing which struck me about SWTS was the incredible number of beautiful coeds.

It would even rival the University of Georgia which I always considered the gold standard for female pulchritude.

My daughter spent last summer in nearby campus housing, and it was a zoo. Police came often to the place to deal with trashing the place, drinking, etc. Glad that nothing major happened while she was there. Worst was drunk passing out in the shower in the apt above, causing major flood below. Police called for that one too.

This story is not surprising.

I went to a state school in a city here in NJ so I could avoid “students” that were looking for four more years of high school. Many fellow students had jobs; they went to class, then went to work; no BS or “playing radical”.
